No offense intended but RTFM. Is is Friday? :)

That said, I once accidentally engaged 4wd when getting out of my parking space and I freaked out when the truck refused to back up like it was attached by a stretchy rope to a pole.

Absolutely I agree. Driving on "dry' roads it specifies.

Thus why you don't see a "center diff lock" on part time 4x4 vehicles.

Pretty sure 4-Hi has a speed limiter that limits the truck to 65. Thats the fastest I was able to go last fall across a playa. Went through a quarter tank of fuel in 30 miles.

    Exactly.

A buddy had a sierra and now a zr2, both have a "4-Auto" mode where you can drive in mixed conditions similar to AWD ....unlike the "4-HI".

Yeah, GM has long had the 4-auto mode. (My dad's 2001 Silverado had it). Ford also has it on Lariat and above, although I'm not sure how long they've had it.

It does not have a speed limiter in 4HI.

2 pages in and this thread is already a classic.

    - shifting into neutral before going into 4hi
    - shifting into 4lo on the fly
    - speed limiter in 4hi
    - the ongoing, never-ending debate on whether 4hi can be used on pavement....can it? It can’t! It can! No it can’t! Lol.

No wonder so many people are confused on how the system works.

Didn’t we go through this shit a week ago?

There needs to be one FAQ's sticky and end it already. Compile all the sticky's into one.

AWD doesn't necessarily have a VC, but it does necessarily have a center differential. A VC is just one of many types of limited slip center differentials. It's also the least durable and most likely to be overheated/abused during off-road use. They are great on road, though.

Having a sticky with this info doesn't help the selfish waterheads that can't be bothered to search for the info. Maybe if everyone stopped answering the same topic every week threads?

My old Liberty had the nv242 transfer case that gave you an all wheel drive like setting you could use even on dry roads but they didn't recommend it cus it caused more wear and effected mpg. It was sort of like the Subaru system but it also had part time and 4lo. I do miss that. It was nice for winter driving.

In my truck now I only use the 4hi in packed snow, unplowed roads and heck my snow and ice covered gravel driveway it comes in handy. Those are all places where the wheels have some slip

That being said, if you're in 4x4, chances are you probably shouldn't be doing 65 to begin with.

I think I was reading years ago about using 4HI on wet pavement and they said using 2WD is safer since you are more likely to slide going around turns when the wheels are in 4HI and have that tendency to skip, you loose traction. So it's not the best for the truck to begin with, but being in 4HI gives a false sense of being safer and giving more traction.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
Didn't say it was necessary. Regular engagement can be done in Drive but sometimes takes anywhere from a few seconds to just blinking indefinitely. I said it engages without issues everytime and quickly when put in N (takes all drive and binding out of the system).

That's not how the actuator and engagement work. N or D, it can't engage until things line up. Applying torque or not to the system doesn't make any difference, and being in N does not equalize axle speeds somehow that being in D makes less likely.

It's all good. Had a feeling you knew what you were talking about since you've been around here enough, just didn't want a new guy to pop in and think he could try to work magic on it...
