Probably aren’t holding clutch down all the way. Stomp it to the floor hard and hold it there. Report back. Mine will engage every time no matter what. 4HI is the one that takes a while for me because everything needs to get synced up going from 2 to 4.

When I go into low range I put it in neutral and have the clutch in. May not be needed but its worked for me so far on all 3 manual Tacomas that I've had.

    Good luck.

If you are at a dead stop, try letting off the brake. Rolling very slightly while shifting in/out of 4Lo can help everything mesh up in the t-case

When actuating mine, in neutral, after selecting 4Lo when I push the clutch in to shift, it then engages.

The truck needs to be under 3 mph. I usually come to a stop. but let off the brake pedal a bit to let the truck roll slightly to help everything line up to engage. Auto, manual, its all the same if the truck is in neutral. You can engage a manual while in gear IF the clutch pedal is all the way down.

I think rolling slightly maybe the answer...

I highly advise against rolling while going in or out of 4lo. I've never once needed to be moving in any of my trucks, whereas 4hi does better while rolling. If you move while going in or out of 4lo, that's a good way to grenade your transfer case, I've watched it happen. I can almost guarantee you're not pushing the clutch in all the way, double check floor mats aren't getting in the way too.

edit: Per the owners manual, manual transmission trucks only need to be 2mph or under.

I have never had to be rolling at all for LOW. I absolutely have to have the clutch pedal all the way down or else it will just blink and beep at me forever. The owner's manual says clutch down.

Agreed fully. I stuck a small furniture pad on the backside of the little ear tab on the pedal that pushes the floor switch. Helps to not have to hold the pedal quite as hard for both starting the truck and getting into LOW since I have thick floor mats.

Also make sure you're going into 4hi, wait for the light to become solid, and THEN go into 4lo. Not saying you are, but you can't go straight from 2hi into 4lo, or vice versa.

It sounds like you're shoving a spoon into a garbage disposal. I don't know the why as to why you need to be at a full stop, but you definitely do.

edit: Per the owners manual, manual transmission trucks only need to be 2mph or slower.

The instance I've seen someone grenade it was when they were on a hill climb in 4HI and decided it wasn't enough and wanted 4LO. They stopped, and were switching to 4LO but rocked backwards ever so slightly while it was switching and it sounded nasty. Needed to replace the whole transfer case after that one.

So I stand corrected, even per the manual it states less than 2mph. With that said, I still recommend trying again at a dead stop, while already in 4HI, and make sure you've got that clutch jammed all the way down.

If that's what you're doing, that's for sure the first part of the problem. Have to switch from 2 to 4 and 4H to 4L each at a time.
