That's good to know. Sometimes I read the problems posts and wonder what it is they are talking about. It's rare times like this that I can ask questions and get more context about issues. The more I read the more it starts to gel and come together.

There are some real dedicated and loyal Jeep fans out there. The kind of folks who wear out a motor and put a new one in because they love their Jeep so much. I've never loved a car that much but this Tacoma is really working on me.

Land Rovers have lockers on front/center and rear. As well as the 4runner limited that has full time 4wd that uses a center diff instead of a transfer case technically has a center locker.
Do jeeps still have lockers? A buddy of mine just bought one but he couldn't really explained it to me, I've heard older Jeeps came with lockers from the factory, and not only that you could engage the front locker at will. I wonder if the new Colorado ZR2 will come with a solid front axle for the locker, I bet you could only engage the front when the rear is on, I wonder what Chevy is doing to mitigate customers tearing their front axles apart with that locker.

You mean a vehicle with a transfer case or 4WD badged is trully 4x2 without lockers. And vehicle with a center diff or badged AWD like a subaru for example is truly a 4x1. Yes you can argue that but a Subie is awesome in snow then your fwd or rwd econoobile, and something with a transfer case and 4LO is even more better then a Subie in snow.

Having said all that all these are just classic textbook examples of drivetrains, which is not the case anymore as technology has advanced you'll go crazy trying to figure out drivetrain across manufacturers, escpecially the badging like Full time 4wd and AWD for example or whats the 4A setting means in the new F150 above the 4hi/4low. Each manufacturer uses different technologies, some of them are hybrid or mixed and are very confusing. SUVs for example that have on demand 4wd, those are weird, toyota itself has like 4 or 5 systems across its suvs and vehicles.

Ok... ok... I'm gonna google it. Because what you just wrote is long enough for a lyric, but I've tried singing it so many different ways it doesn't rhyme

Is it little Wayne? You have to tell me if I'm close...

I know I'm quoting my own darned post but this will help with my question:

It's my understanding that the type of 4x4 specs I have in my quoted post above is only to be used on loose dirt/gravel, snow and possibly mud. Not intended to be used on normal dry pavement. Does this sound right?

Correct. Basically there's a difference between AWD and 4WD. Typically AWD uses a center differential and 4WD uses a transfer case. The major operation difference being you can use an AWD vehicle in dry conditions because there's "slip" built into unlocked differentials (remember AWD uses a center differential). You'll notice this is necessary when you realize all four tires travel in different arcs thus different distances when turning, which is not possible when the wheels are all locked together mechanically.

Edit: found this video that explains it, saw it posted on another forum
