Hey Everyone, due for my 40k service soon. At what point do you guys stop going to the dealer? Is an oil change the only thing I really need at this point? Sick of the stealership and I'm not getting any free services there anymore... so wondering what everyone does after the 2 year free contract is up.

If you are confident in your skills, a tranny drain and fill is good to incorporate every 30k or so. Not the entire system, but if done routinely it will keep the fluid in good shape. If not already done, differential and xfer case drain and fill would be a good idea.

    on this Tacoma? If not...
You MUST positively identify the oil drain plug and the tranny drain plug, and choose the correct plug to drain. Sounds simple, but Toyota has camouflaged them in such a way that it’s easy to mistake the tranny plug for the oil. Madness ensues.

never on the taco, no. If the only major thing is an oil change I may just try it.

I'm lazy. Sometimes I change it myself. Sometimes I take it to the dealer. Sometimes I play dumb and let my friends "teach" me how to change the oil myself.

Plan to do small stuff like oil, and any fluid changes after the 2y/24 miles is over. All looks pretty straight forward. Anything else we have a pretty good napa shop thats toyota certified. As far tires, as long as their purchased from our area tire shop, they offer free rotation as long as you have on the vehicle.

just curious, what kind of picture would help you determine what service needs to be completed at 40k...?

Oil change, tire rotation, maybe air filters, that’s it. Unless you have visible abnormal tire wear, then alignment then. No fluid exchanges or flushes, no fuel injection cleaning, no throttle body cleaning, and no transmission service. These are common services the dealer will try to sell you.

also don’t fall for the $300 40k mile service or stuff like that, my friend did that on his corolla and it consisted of mostly the multipoint inspection.

I never go to those scumbags unless its a recall or warranty work. Better off doing your own maintenance, at least you will know that its done and done right.

Way better to go to your favourite local mechanic for maintenance if you dont wanna do it yourself.

I have never had to darken the door unless it's warranty or recall work. Maintenance is either mine or the independent shop I use + a tire store + an alignment shop.

Was never really free. You paid up front when you bought the truck. The 'free' hook was to get you in the door so they could tell you what else they needed to do to properly service you. When you think about it like that, their free bulk oil changes are a money making hook. Not bad! For them.

OTOH, if you ran the business, that's what you'd do too. And for some customers it's a good 'value', because they don't know, and don't want to know, what needs to be done. They just want to trust and pay someone.
