I'm new to the forum. I've recently started having an issue with my tacoma experiencing the "40mph tacoma shake". I've read a lot about this on this site, but haven't been able to find a solution. Currently, if I reach about 40 mph while in D, my truck experiences a shudder. If I drop to 4, it goes away. If I gently tap my brake to activate the brake release while holding on the gas, the shudder stops temporarily but comes back. I am pretty overdue on my transmission fluid change and I plan to do this in the next week. But I don't want to pay for that just to have to redo it to get back into transmission if that's the cause. I appreciate any help with this issue!
    Thanks

Welcome to tw. Again go you feel it in the steering wheel, your seat or the skinny pedal.

Is your truck lifted? New tires?

    Thanks,
No lift. Tires are a year old and this didn’t start when they were replaced. Stock size tires, not oversized. Truck shakes like it’s in drivetrain, only when accelerating around 40-45 mph. Kind of like going over speed grooves on side of interstate. I’ve seen a few older post talk about hitting the brake when this happens, and sure enough when I do that, it stops but comes right back.
Also when I let off the gas pedal, it stops.

Check joints or carrier bearing. Booth easy fixes.

I had a similar issue, changing the transmission fluid fixed that problem immediately.

So I'm having the same issue and spent quite a bit $$$ replacing parts. @Matmo215 did you find out what was causing the problem? I'm also getting random misfires with the 40-45 mph shakes.

Transmission fluid. Hook up a computer and if it's misfires check spark plugs, coil packs, and spark plug wires.

I was going to post a solution once I found it, but still searching... I had my transmission fluid flushed, that didn’t resolve the shudder. I tried adding Dr Tranny’s Instant Shudder Fix just yesterday, but it didn’t make an immediate difference. Dr. Tranny says you can add up to two tubes of that stuff, and probably 30% spilled out while I was trying to pour it in, so I’m thinking of trying one more tube. But as of now, still getting the shudder between 40 and 45mph.

Havent done the transmission fluid. Have changed the spark plugs, coil packs, injectors, thermostat, cnc valve (think its called), dropped the gas tank and emptied all gas and filled half full premium, added c foam to gas, cleaned Mass Air Flow sensor. Checked compression @cold temp. Cylinder 5 and 6 only at 110lbs. Dropped truck off at mechanic a couple hours ago. Nout to pull my hair out.
2010 toyota 4x4 extra cab with only 68k miles. :/

Hey guys. I've got something to share too. I'm having the same issue though - around 40-45mph, 1000RPM and 5th it shudders, especially if you'd drive uphill a bit. My 2012 Tacoma Double Cab 4x4 TRD Sport was lifted. I went thru 3 different dealers. As the result of my "shudder" saga - truck has been lowered back to stock position, transmission has been flushed few times, they replaced driveshaft, u-joints, etc,. and ECU was upgraded. The problem is still there. I opened a case with Toyota trying to have them assigned me to some more professional techs, but there seems no movement towards that direction. So, I have no idea but there is still something wrong with it...

Same exact thing for me. No solution yet. Has anyone mentioned anything to you about the torque converter? I’ve seen a few old posts about that but nothing definite.

Well, in Toyota of Stamford, CT they mentioned it, but the service rep was talking like he wasn't sure 100% if it's torque converter, he also added that it could be a problem with the tranny... At Toyota of Milford, CT they offered me to drive a different 2012 TRD Sport truck saying 'this' could be a common thing for truck of that age. I drove it for a while - drives all right, no issues...

Id check the ujoints. I was getting a driveline vibration at 45mph and only at that speed, and it ended up being the ujoint closest to the carrier bearing

Did you also have the carrier bearing replaced at the same time? A bad cb can also cause shudders/vibes
