Good morning Rob. Those are BIG guns. But then again, you have BIG critters up there that you may encounter while out and about. Back in the day, my Dad had a S&W .357 Highway Patrolman with a 6" barrel as his duty weapon that I thought was a hand cannon, lol. I've never been a semi-auto guy. Grew up with revolvers. I like my Ruger SP101 .357 for protection from the "critters" around her. :D

Yeah, as a LE handler you have to learn to read sign also and there are different methods we train to track freshest human scent meaning yeah the dog will follow foot steps but not directly on them. If the dog picks up the same scent from say 90 degrees from the original they will turn and follow that scent cone. Foot step trackers while very good for non criminal searches are dangerous in criminal searches. They will only follow the foot steps so if the guy circles around he can have you in his sights while your following your dog. We run on lead as if we run into someone not involved and they freak and run well if you run your prey ...The best human trackers are Blood hounds which is pretty much agreed on through out the K-9 world. Cadaver dogs are a whole other world of scent work hell one of the best guys in the US years ago was able to find a body in a swamp the handler is from Connecticut https://sardog.org/index.php/downlo...k-forensic-training-and-tactics-2000-ww1/file Interesting reading.

At the time, we used Central Jersey Search and Rescue. They had an arrangement with the NJ Air National Guard for transport and to assist in searches also coordinated with NJOEM which in turn worked with the County OEM's (that was my gig). Central Jersey SAR made me aware of the SAR network throughout the country. I my fading memory serves me correctly, the SAR K9 that found the child was actually from a NY based SAR team.

Quick funny story, a few months after we developed and implemented new search protocols, I was at a car dealership with one of my sons helping him buy a new car. I was the County OEM Coordinator at the time and all SAR responses were coordinated through my office. I got a call about a missing elderly person from one of the municipalities and they were requesting SAR assets. The car salesman freaked out when I started calling for the SAR team and aviation assets from the NJ Air Guard. The look on his face was priceless. :D

    :)

Yep, we've worked some of the same wickets. The 4+ years I worked in Rescue were some of the most rewarding, and at times emotionally draining, of my active duty career. Wouldn't trade that experience for anything.

Yep, lots of successes and failures along the way, not just SAR, but my whole public safety career. SAR was just a small part of it. I can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday, but I can remember the first time I found a fatal fire victim like I did it last night, and that was 37 years ago.
