Only reason I’m doing it is because I’m on a paid vacation of sorts. I’m PCS’ing (permanent change of station) to CA so I decided to make the most of it with the kiddo. He was itching to visit the Grand Canyon and Zion.

I’m with you though, the parks have got insane with the people and it really, really takes away from the experience.

I’m just happy he’s into the outdoors, camping and enjoying what nature has provided us. He could be at home tied to the TV and video games

Now, if I could only get him to wash the camp dishes I’d be set

We were in a state park decided to go for a night walk. Came across a Ranger and were told to return to our campsite! “We like our campers in their sites at night” WTF virtual prisoners at night! Otherwise I recommend a night walk.

My last time at Zion, hiking angels landing felt like Walmart on Black Friday. :(
It’s my favorite park but I was there on a holiday weekend which was a bad move on my part.

    When I went to Arches and Canyonlands, these . . . . everywhere . . .

And it was the beginning of September, so lots of folks with kids were already back at home starting school or getting ready to. I can't imagine going in the middle of summer.

Glacier was awesome when we went 6 years ago, It was busy, but not so busy that i wanted to kill people. and once you got out to hiking or anything like that, there were very few people around.

Yellowstone was just a PITA. Way too many people and way too many people who disrespect the park.

re: Ranger - potentially a personal preference, cause afraid of what might happen in the dark. With friends, we go hiking in the dark on purpose. Keeps us sharp for when we really need to do it. Freaks the occasional newbie that come with us out. As for stats, one of the Alberta Parks we frequent - turns out less than 1% of visitors to the park venture more than 1km (0.63 miles) from their parked car. Thank goodness.

The last time we went to Zion was in the middle of July back in the early 2000's. It was just right after they started using the busses and wouldn't let you drive in the main part of the park (unless you were staying at the lodge). I don't know what it was but we were the only ones there. We hiked Angles Landing and we were the only ones on the trail and had the landing all to ourself. The bus ride back to the visitors center was just my wife and I and a couple from some country that I don't remember but they were very nice.

That same trip we went to the Grand Canyon and although there were people there it wasn't crowded and we got to see a lot of what we wanted to see. I'm sure Zion has changed since. It is probably my favorite NP that I've been to. The views are just unbelievable.

I totally agree with Yellowstone. My ex and I went there and we stayed in Jackson Hole. We would drive to the park and go to one spot each day but it was so fucking crowded that it was just not a lot of fun. Trying to get anywhere in the park was a pain. And with a speed limit of 45mph (which no one follows and goes 15-20mph) made getting from one place to the other unbearable. Traffic jams every other turn. The scenery is beautiful though.

I like going to the parks that aren't nearly as popular. Gunnison Canyon comes to mind. Unless you know about it there aren't too many people there. In fact we went at the end of Sept one year and there was no one there at all. I mean no one. It was just my wife and I. Beautiful place and if you've never been I would highly recommend it.
