Same here. Out of all the shit I've done in my life... sticking my finger in my eye has never sounded appealing to me. I'm 48 now and I've always had perfect vision. But I've noticed over the last couple of years reading small print has been getting harder. Went to the eye doctor last year and had them checked. Doc was pretty cool. He just told me to go out and buy some cheap reading glasses since I have no trouble seeing things further away. He said "I can try to sell you some bifocals but why?" Thought that was pretty cool of him.

I can't stand being without a watch. I've considered buying the new Apple Watch but I much prefer the analog look of a regular watch. Smart watches just don't do anything for me.

I've had this Tissot for about 5 years now. It's titanium so it doesn't weigh anything and the crystal is actually touch sensitive so depending on the area you touch it becomes a compass, alarm, altimeter, timer, etc...

    @TenBeers

I don't know if you are a True Detective fan or not but I can not wait until this next season comes out.

The first season was one of the best series I've ever watched on TV. I just couldn't get into the second season since I couldn't take Vince Vaughn seriously as a mobster. But this third season looks like it's going to be amazing. Plus it's filmed right up in your area. All around Fayetteville, Rodgers, Devils Den, etc...

And on a truly sad note. Last night about 6pm I heard a siren somewhere while I was messing around on the computer. I thought it was on the freeway since we live about a mile from it so it's not unusual to hear them every once in a while. Our friends that just moved back from DC came over not long after to give us a gift and asked us what was going on down the street? I look down the street and the police have one of the cul-de-sacs blocked off with crime scene tape and along with a firetruck and about 10 police cars. I walked down the street to see what was going on but it didn't take me long to figure it out. I've seen this scene enough times to know what has already happened so I just turned around and walked back home once I saw Medflight getting ready to land. I didn't know the people that lived there since they haven't lived there for very long. But... it turns out that the husband shot his wife then went out into the yard and shot and killed himself.

We are a neighborhood of 45 upscale houses. We are extremely lucky that it seems that everyone in our neighborhood gets along. In the 13 years that I've lived here the worst thing that has happened has been the girl that stole the wreath off our our house. So you can imagine that this is a shock. The people that used to live in that house we used to be good friends with and used to go to their house often for parties and get togethers. They moved out about a year ago so we never met the couple that moved in. The truly sad thing is, they have an 18 year old daughter, 16 yr old son, and a 13 yr old daughter. I've just never been able to figure out what goes through someone's head when they do something like this?

Here's all I've got so far.

Very tragic, and the kids are at a particularly vulnerable age. Seeing that happen geographically so close to home, where you've built a life literally outside and away from the places where this is more the norm, would shake me a bit to the core. Then again financial stability, calm, excellent neighbourhood, are no guarantee against mental illness. It always amazes me that the same mind that can fight against overwhelming odds for physical survival can also turn against you. I've seen my share of such outcomes in wilderness environments.

He was 44 and she was 36. That's the only other thing that I've found out.

The city I live in has had 3 murders since the time I moved down here 13 years ago. I look back to when I first came on the job we were averaging 3 to sometimes 8 drive by shootings a day. Little Rock is still one of the highest crime rate cities per capita in the nation. That is one of the reasons we moved.
I suppose you just never know what someone is capable of when put into a situation that they think they can't get out of. The mind is a very complex thing.

Our organization just had an incident where one member shot and killed his wife, his 7 year old, critically wounded his 8 year old and then turned the gun on himself.

I truly do not understand what would push someone to do something so horrible.

Apparently...it was a domestic dispute that escalated.

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing happened here.

Unfortunately I've seen this all to often. Just by looking at the scene I already had a good suspicion of what had already happened.

I don't know all the details of what exactly happened. Here's what I do know. Their next door neighbor told us that they have been having a bunch of parties over the last month or so. They told us one morning that they had trouble even getting out of their driveway to go to work because of the amount of vehicles still in the cul-de-sac. They said that they heard constant arguing which is something in itself considering the size of the houses in our neighborhood. So if I were to take a guess I'd imagine some kind of alcohol (or whatever else) could have been involved.
But what drives someone to do something like this has always been beyond me? I agree that his children will never be the same after this.

One of my best friends on the FD had a similar thing happen to him when he was 16 and his father shot his mother directly in front of him. His father is spending life in jail and it definitely affected him in a negative way. He owned a carpet business and was worth well over a million dollars and did the FD almost as a hobby. He was a damn good FF but as time went on he spriled out of control and eventually left the job, lost his business, and is now penniless. So that's an effect that I have personally witnessed.

I've seen this exact scene play out hundreds of times when I was on the job. It didn't take me long to put the pieces together what had happened the other night just from observing the scene. I just walked away as I didn't want to be around it as it brings up bad memories and there was nothing I could do anyway.

You brought up something Murph that I think about every 4th of July. I had about a year on the job and had already witnessed more murders than I cared to think about even by that time. Even when I was 22 I was able to compartmentalize what was going on around me but this one run stuck with me. It happened on July 3rd and a landlord was changing the locks on his rent house because he was having trouble with his renter. About that time the renter showed up, pulled a shotgun out of his truck, and shot the guy directly in the chest. The renter went back out to his truck and pulled out a 22 and went in the house, sat in the tub, stuck the gun in his ear, and pulled the trigger. He was still alive when we arrived on scene and we had to work him as much as I didn't want to after he had just taken this man's life.

I was hoping that the landlord didn't have a wife or kids since he looked to be in his early 30's but he did. He had two kids and his wife was expecting their third. So July 4th will never be the same for them and one child will never know their father. That was the first run on the FD that really kind of struck me hard. I just buried it deep down inside.

Yeah, I’ve been to a bunch of fucked up shit on holidays. One kid shot another one when they were out shooting squirrels with the new gun they got. People drunk af driving and killing themselves when they wreck. Hell I had one the morning of last shift I have to cut out that if he manages to survive will be a vegetable. 21 y/o drunk as hell at 0630 in the morning went through a telephone pole and then hit a tree so hard he flipped it up onto the roof crushing the roof down on him. Resp 8 and bubbling blood. Took 45 min to cut him out. Guess what his family will remember at Christmas time every year?

Yeah. I don't miss working things like that. I know it still happens everyday but I don't have to bare witness to it anymore. Hope you won't have too much longer either brother.
