If you know eMASS, the DIACAP process, NIST 800 series, and have the IT background that I think you do, I know a VA shop in Austin TX that can always use Information Assurance contractors. From there, folks are able to make a name for themselves and the good ones move into VA FTE positions.

I hear that their new boss is kind of a dick, though.

I really have no intention of doing any IA function once I retire.

Network engineering and Layer 1-4 is where I’d prefer to be

We have those positions too, but fewer and harder fought over.
Sounds like you want Colorado Springs and the AFSPACE NOSC on Peterson AFB.

    Does it involve tower climbing?

Network engineer shift work keeping the network up and running.

    Climbing poles is for kids.

Sounds boring. I’ve avoided the NOSC and EOC all my career, don’t want to get into it now.

Most fun I’ve had in the CG was being outside in the antenna field raising antenna’s. Outside pulling cable across a campus. Outside climbing towers and hoisting microwave dishes, mounting them and aligning them. Installing TDM equipment in remote huts etc.

Keep an eye on Huntsville, as you prepare to retire. You can’t beat the income vs. cost of living ratio.

Indeed.com is how I found my current job.

Outside plant, got it. Then you can pretty much live anywhere. Installers don’t make what the inside plant guys make, but with your background you’d be dispatcher, foreman or crew chief pretty quickly (if not right away).

The world is your oyster, especially those places still upgrading to fiber. So, everything between California and Kentucky, Oklahoma up to Canada.

I’m not looking to make a ton of money. I’m not in it for that. I’m in it for job enjoyment. I want to wake up and want to go to work not the other way around.

I’m a very hands on type of worker. I like getting in and understanding the intricacies of things. I’ve been through several BICSI classes, several grounding and bonding classes, fiber installer and tech, Cisco classes, etc.

I’m not opposed to inside plant either. Even managing the projects and ensuring EIA/TIA standards are met, I’m good

Yes, yes I did. He crossed the line with his last picture. Well, he’s crossed it 4 times before and was handed bans for each of those. Clearly he didn’t get the picture.

It was a meme with the top saying “teacher asked what comes after a sentence?” Bottom was “told her an appeal” with the pic of a black kid in a classroom holding his hand up.

Yeah, saw that and thought it was in very bad taste.

If you’re considering comm projects, get a PMP certification before you retire. All your experience as a SNCO counts for the time requirement, and the cert puts your resume on the top of the pile.

    I wouldn’t mind ITIL and a PMP
