I drop the occasional bomb, but I tend to swear in other languages instead. Much more acceptable... :p

I agree with most of this, especially the feeling odd or embarrassed part.

I completely disagree with the being shot at part. I had a lot of issues when my fourth deployment was canceled. At some point I had got it in my head I needed to die down range. Apparently that LT Dan nonsense is real. With that resolved, it’s scary how addictive and fun it was to get shot at or blown up.

Probably doesn’t help the entire year of our first tour, (did counter IED all tours) we drove to get hit. No counter-IED equipment at the time and we had armor, the supply patrols just had pig iron bolted to the sides. Only solution we could come up with was to drive out first and take the hit. Repair the vehicles (if needed) and go back out. Still miss it. :notsure:

I feel much the same way. I appreciate someone that says "thank you for your service" and yes, I had to do a lot of things that I don't wish on anyone. But no one made me sign up for that job. I did it myself originally for selfish reasons (the money and benefits). But after I got on and realized what I signed up for it made a man out of me. I needed direction in my life and the FD gave me that direction. But the worst I ever felt was after 9/11. Everyone loved FF's after that and we were constantly receiving gifts (food mostly) for a long time after that. But it always bothered me. I wasn't there when the towers fell. Hell... I wasn't even close to anything 9/11 related. But I suppose the way that I coped with those events was if it had happened here, we would have done the same.

But I always feel if you want to thank someone. Thank my Grandfather who spent nearly four years overseas during WWII. Thank my Dad for serving in Viet Nam. And to an extent... thank my Biological father for serving in Viet Nam (but that's a story for another day). Those are the true hero's in my book.

I'm glad someone was there to do that job, and even happier that it wasn't me.

Also glad that your equipment was up to the task you set it to. What did you drive to get blown up and keep going? MRAP? Uparmored Humvee? '73 Olds Delta 88?

Thank God, times have changed since then. Shit like that wouldn't happen today.

My father flew a chopper in 'Nam and was shot down, but survived. His copilot still lives up in Michigan somewhere, dying of cancer from exposure to agent orange. My father has Parkinsons now because of the agent orange.

This isn't a discussion unless I drop Jimmy in here. Jumped into Normandy at 17 years old, Bastogne, and Holland (bridge too far).

    RIP Jimmy.

    Holding the fucking flag.

First tour the U.S. used the Stryker. We certified the concept for the army that year. MRAPs take a hit way better (v-hull) but you’re less of a soft target when you have a .50 cal, M240, two M249s, M203, and 4 M4s sticking out the hatches. Of course we rarely seen who blew us up or shot at us. Just helped avoid sustained fights or emboldened attacks. We had some guys from the same post doing other routes in the same area on our second tour, completely MRAPs. They used to get ambushed with small arms all the time. Something to be said for a response of mass fire.

Ok, we're getting way to serious in here. Time for something a little different.

This looks full gonzo, in a good way.

You have no idea. That dude was always chatting up bitches half his age. All. The. Time. And they were digging it.

And on 9-11, we were at Reno. It is the only time I ever saw him utterly distraught and incapacitated. My best friend spent quite some time at the bar with him that day and night. Jimmy was his mentor to earn his A&P.

    Good call.

FUCK it does... actually haven’t seen the preview yet, but felt like it’s been too long for an f-bomb in here.
