So the truck has 470 miles on it. I've always changed the oil on new vehicles at 500 miles, 1500 miles and 3000 miles. There was quite a bit of metal in the filter housing and some in the filter itself. Hopefully this will convince some of the naysayers that changing very early on a new vehicle has its advantage. Please keep the negative comments to yourself as this is just my opinion and findings.

Mine was similar. You have some bigger chunks than I did, but not by much.

I change mine every 5000 miles and each time I changed it, there was less metal. I changed mine at 20k this last weekend and there was absolutely no metal in it.

I switched to the TRD filter as always but will probably do oil & filter again at 1,000 miles.

My wife's 2014 4Runner was getting the Toyota Care treatment until last November when I started doing the oil changes. This is my first cartridge filter vehicle and I noticed some buildup and metal flakes in the filter housing (29,000 or so miles). I wonder if we see more debris in a canister compared to a spin-on filter because we are actually releasing what is in the canister when we take it off and the media out? Wouldn't the outside of the filter/outer edge of the filter housing hold the most debris and have a chance of layering up if nobody cleaned it out? I cleaned it out best I could without resorting to any cleaners (I didn't want any residual leftover when I dropped the new filter media in) and put it back on.

I have since done a second change at a 7,000 mile interval instead of 10,000 and there was little to no buildup and less debris but it was still present. I also wondered if the Toyota dealer was changing the oil and not the media considering what I saw in the filter housing the first time I took it off.

Regardless, I will be handling all the oil changes on my Tacoma as I did not like how the dealership handled the tire rotations, etc. My wife could care less about scratched/gouged rims and hoods left open...thank you Universal Toyota.

I personally like to do fairly early changes on new engines also, did my first at 1500 miles and will do the 2nd at 5000.

The filter is there to capture those bits of metal and it worked. I'm missing the advantage?

I haven't decided if I will go with the 10K recommendation after that, been thinking of 7500 mile intervals

I´m not here to make a negative comment, so hopefully it doesn´t sound that way, but, of course there will be metal in the filter at 500 miles. The rings are seating and everything is meshing together. You see it more on a cartridge filter because you are actually looking inside the filter vs. the canister where you could not see inside of it without cutting it open. The filter is doing its job and serving its purpose.
You can do whatever you want, its your truck and your money, and I am not going to tell you any different, Hey, it keeps the oil industry in business to more you change your oil right.

i changed mine at 2000km and again at 6000km. when I check with dip stick I still see a tiny bit of metal. Was told up till about 10 000km I'll see a little after that shouldn't anymore. So next oil change is at 16 000 (i'm at 11 000) we'll see after that if I still see any.

Not saying it ain't, just a lot of people saying metal in the oil in a new engine is a thing of the past. I know it's gonna be there, some of y'all know it's gonna be there, point is, I want it out of my trucks oil system asap, hence the early oil changes. This thread was started only to show the naysayers that metal is there and that I want it gone through several very early oil changes. I'm sorry some of you see this as a horse beaten, pointless thread that does nothing more than show how I give money to the oil companies. :deadhorse::bananadead::annoyed::duel::santa::frusty::frusty::facepalm:

Posting your opinion, then telling others that you don't care to hear theirs is... interesting.
Congrats on having an oil filter that works I guess.

It's not in your oil system. It's in the filter and housing.

It's not pointless to me but this subject about oil change intervals always gets a lot of controversy. The bottom line in my opinion is I never damaged an engine in the last 45 years of driving due to changing my oil to often. A very cheap investment for a little piece of mind!

If there were not trash in the system then a filter would not be required. There will be metal in your oil until the motor turns it's last revolution.
The whole key is to have a filter that has the capacity to hold the debris for 10K miles. We have that.
