Every new engine will have metal shavings found in the filter. New engines have to break in. Oil filters do their job. Early oil changes are fine for your peace of mind, but they aren't necessary....those are the facts.

That's how I feel about my opinions. And I agree with you.

Nothing is "bullet proof" in the real world. There is always a bigger bullet somewhere. Something is "bullet resistant" until it meets a bigger bullet.

Well I was trying not to add anything but here is my personal experience I had with my 2009 BMW 128i their service recommendations were the same once a year or 10k at 60k my warranty ran out. Fortunately I had also purchase extended warranty for 100k engine block ceased up they tried to blame me even thought they had all the records of service. They fought me every step of the way not to pay to make a long story short if I had been changing my oil every 7500 my engine block would not have ceased up once they fixed it I got rid of it and bought me another G I do not care what Toyota says or BMW Nissan/Infiniti for that matter I read the consumers reports for complaints and recommendations and right now from what I have read my conclusion is this I do not like to gamble with my investments I Retired at 28 years old and because I hate to lose. My methods insure that I will always be a winner by learning from others mistakes.

I don't think it was poor maintenance that killed your BMW. I think it was poor punctuation.

Synthetic oil can run longer between changes. I used synthetic oil in my 2nd gen and... dare I say it... changed the oil every 10K.

Those guys that want to change it more often are within their right to do so and I will never say they're wrong.

But those of us that don't aren't total idiots.

Just in case someone hasn't posted this already (inevitable it shows up on most of the 123,458,335 oil threads created each month on TW).

    Read, research, adsord, learn, etc.

So much real info there. If it were required reading there would be no need for worthless oil thread after worthless oil thread around here.

Did mine today at 4000 miles. Pretty clean actually. Oil filter different story.

Proof of lazy workmanship, I'd be nervous about what's lurking in the other mechanical parts that don't have filters.

he is correct... back in the day when I was a Porsche tech the the 2 valve 944's had issues like this... unless you want a hand built motor you are going to have production issues like this... the machining, threading, assembly/break in is going to put bits of aluminum/steel into the oiling system... the 944's had pressure relief valve that would trap all of the gunk and stick closed... you fired it up and took off. If you reved it too high cold you would blow the filter right off the block... what a mess.

I've owned a few 944's and I have never hear of this problem.

that is because it was solved at the dealer and they never told you, only needs to be done once... take the pressure relief cap/plug off of the oil/water cooler, spring/plunger out spray lots of carb clean and a long cotton swab to get the accumulation of crap, inspect the plunger for scoring replace as necessary and reinstall. LOTS of things happen at the dealer that the car owner is never told... silent warranty is what we called them. You just spent $$$ on a new German auto, do you really want to hear that there is an issue like this. Cam belts were another big issue on these. Used to keep a good spare 2 valve head in the parts dept for quick turn around when the cam belt would jump. Towed in in the AM and could usually leave that day.

Shoot, I got mine "new" off the lot with 4K miles (all I could find in Dec 2015) and changed the oil at 10K, 20K, 30K and 40K thus far. Hopefully no problems present themselves at 200K because of this but I'll take a bet that it'll be just fine. Engine will probably outlast the rest of the truck anyway. Just sold my wife's '97 F250 HD with 345,000 miles on it and it's 5.8L was still humming along just fine.

Does the 2 year free maintenance period allow for oil changes whenever you want?
