When I had my 12 2 door and put on 265's it was a dog. No lift bone stock with those tires I drove it on a 5 hour trip got back home and sold it for the 4.0

I live in hill country, and didnt notice a big power loss i didnt purchase a 4cyl to have a power house tho. I wanted a proven, and reliable engine. Everyone assumes that people only buy the 4cyl for fuel economy. I bought it because it has a proven track record, its simple, it was much cheaper than the 6 cyl and decent mpgs help. Im not going to tow a huge heavy trailer, and im not going to drag race.

I didn't notice any appreciable difference in mpg. I went from stock to 265/70/16 rugged trails (don't hate lol). Still getting 18-20mpg average when I check at the station each time I fill up.

What ended up happening to your fuel mileage? Thinking of making this exact same change myself.

I noticed a massive difference when I wentsb to 265s, engine sucked more than Sasha Grey, of course I also bolted on a few hundred lbs of steel..... if I could go back to the mpgs of when I was a stocker and still have the same amount of fun I would. But it's impossible so the bigger tires stay. Even when commuting 110km per day.... still get 20 mpg tho lol

I ordered the 245s. Kinda regretting my decision already, but I think I made the "smart" choice. I commute 100 miles a day (160 km), so even a 10% decrease in MPGs would cost at least an extra $500 a year.

I use fuelly and when I went up on tire size to the 265/70/16 I went from 22-24mpg to 21-23mpg. I also upgraded to alloy wheels and the weight savings may be helping. I live in the hilly north east but very little stop and go driving. Running Goodyear Wranglers All Terrains.

I have the reg cab 4x2 auto non prerunner. I went the 2wd route for the mpgs. Just my luck gas went to $2 gal. should have opted for the 4wd.

In stock form, the little 2x4 averaged 22 mpg all around driving like Miss Daisy. Was rated to get 24 mpg on hwy, never got that good mpg. So like everyone else, bigger is better. Installed 3 inch lift, went to 31" wrangler authority's. Mpgs average 17 mpg now. Dont regret the lift or bigger tires, but would be nice to get in the 20's again. Taking in to account the diameter difference, i think toyota used the smaller stock tire to come up with the supposedly great mpgs that are rated on the sticker. I've used mile markers to calculate the difference in actual mileage and the bigger tires. They are about 12-13% under mileage from actual. According to the tire conversion charts the difference between the 31's and the 215's is 13.3%.

In stock form, I got 400 miles when the fuel light came on, now I get 300 miles. Thats a loss of 25% in actual mpg. Must be the weight difference in the tires.

I get 20 mpg on 35s with armour and my rtt on the back. But still I'm buying a daily so I don't burn up my tires and rack up the non offroad miles

I am usually between 23 and 24 so dropping to 20 wouldn't be ideal. I also think you're lucky to be getting that, based on what others have shared. Still waiting to hear from @Millerman93 but it looks like he got a new truck.

I put on 265/75 16. Noticed a drop of about 2 mpg with a noticeable loss in power. If I could do it again I would go same height but narrower. I think 235/85 are what I've seen a lot of on here (1" narrower). Highway driving did become a little more comfortable (lower RPM at highway speeds) and my speedometer is now almost dead on accurate.

Side note: my Cooper Discoverer AT3's have about 17000 miles on them and look brand new.

YES! Thank you! Everyone was providing helpful answers but with so many different variables (body style, lift, armor, 1st gen, etc, etc). I was hoping for a straight up answer from someone with my same specs. Thank you sir.

It's been consistent for almost a year, if I take the rtt off it hops up to 23ish, 4.88s and 35s make it run like stock and I dont exceed 70mph.

Ah, yes. Re-gearing definitely helps. Now we're talking a completely different animal though.
