I added a pile of mods to mine as well and just returned mine back to stock. The only thing that could kill the 4 cylinder auto Tacoma is overheating the transmission which is easy to do on long mountain hills. You could work the crap out of the motor running up to redline for hours and you couldn't kill it.

Regear was in the plans just hadn't gotten there yet a kid in college can put a damper on things sometimes but worth it. It all worked out in the end anyway

As much as I complain about the power in my V6 SR5 double cab, I still think it'd be fun to have the 4 banger access cab.

sortof stock. 6112/5160, pro wheels and a tune.
I love mine, which is also a 5sp. My previous was a 4x4 auto 2.7 singlecab. That thing was painfully slow. I used to get the middle finger from people going up hills in the mountains, (i was in the slow lane too).
The 3rd gen I have is waaaay faster, and has way more useable power than the other. Mileage is really good too. Just make sure you get the convenience package. With all that, its very close to the same spec as a 2nd gen sr5. I didnt get an sr5 because I didnt need all that fancy bs. I just wanted something simple that worked.

Plus I read somewhere that the 2.7 is overbuilt compared to a lot of 4 cylinders on the market today. Plus its a time-tested Toyota design. If you know you're gonna be slower than all the V6 guys going into it I think its a viable option. There's something really charming about it to me.

Does anyone have the axle ratios (auto and manual) and the gearing in the transmission (again auto and manual) from gen 2 and gen 3 so we can compare? I think the engine is the same since 2005 except for the addition of dual vvti which is really only for emissions and MAYBE some extra ponies near redline

Only the 4 cylinder 4x4s had the 4.10 gearing, I believe.

Yep - my 2015 4x4 has a 4.10 diff. front and rear. Other than the ridiculously high gearing for reverse, I have no complaints or regrets after two years of use with regards to driving a base 4x4 Access Cab with 5 on the floor.

Yeah I must admit the reverse gearing on these trucks is a bit ridiculous. Honestly, who needs to do 25-30 mph while backing up? seems like the only thing they didn't do right. Everything else on my prerunner 2.7 has been great.. :fistbump:

This is correct but this is a 4x4 thread so we're not taking about the 2x4s here anyway.
Do all 2016+ 4bangers have 4.30 axle ratios?

Thanks but are A and B 2nd gen or 3rd gen? That's what I wanted to compare not banger to V6

I think the 4x4 does, but I’m not sure. It’s either 3.9 or 4.3. Every thread that mentions this is contradicting. I can tell you this for sure- I can do the speed limit in reverse and I get terrible gas mileage when I do.

I bought one in 2008, regular cab 4x4 5 speed 4 cylinder. I liked it a lot. It was a very bare-bones truck, manual windows, no cruise-control (I'll never buy a vehicle without CC again, I don't use it often but when I do it's very nice to have), and went from 0-60 in about 23 minutes. But it served me well. I traded it for a Tundra in 2011 when I decided I needed a bigger truck with added passenger room and more creature-comforts, but should have simply gotten a Tacoma DC with a few extra farkles. That's what I have now and doubt I'll be needing anything more in the foreseeable future.

I get that, but the person I quoted has a pre-runner so I thought my info was relevant as he thought ALL 2nd gen 4cylinder 5-speed trucks had the 4.10 gears.
Only the 3rd gen autos have the 4.3 gears, manuals get 3.9. I really think they all should have the 4.3 as my truck is geared way too high

Strange, that's exactly the reverse of the V6 trucks where auto gets 3.9 axle ratios and manual gets 4.3
