Looking to tow around 2500 - 3000lbs 1000 miles, GA to Upstate Ny, would the 3rd Gen 4 cyl 4x2 auto be sufficient to do so regarding that weight and distance without having a Transmission cooler? I’m aware it’s rated tow rating is up to 3500 and it has more to do with stopping power of the weight than the truck engine. Just not sure of the strain on the truck transmission without having a cooler added.

itll do fine. I regularly tow 1500-4000k with mine. Between decked, shell, tools I’m around 700 pounds in the bed. This trailer weighs 2300, the cab somewhere around 7-800. Does fine.

Nice to see somebody in North America tasking the 2TR the way it gets tasked in the rest of the world.

Tell me about the hitch and receiver you're using--how much were they and where did you get them?

I don’t have a pic handy, but it’s just a regular hitch and lights. I got the utility package in 2019 and it didn’t come with anything. So I bought a curt 5k pound receiver and light hookup. Installed it all in my driveway in 1 hour.

were you able to install the 2 bolts in the middle? I just couldn't get them to come out of the holes and gave up, just 4 bolts on the side holding the hitch, doesn't seem to go anywhere

Yes I was. Mine came with the little metal coat hanger looking thing that u fished the bolts in with. Had to hold your mouth just right

My 2.7 4 cylinder Tacoma towing a trailer with gear a quad and dirt bike, also with a dual sport KTM dirt bike in the bed. Towed up some pretty steep hills on the highway and it tows perfectly fine. Although I did add a transmission cooler to the truck I’m pretty sure it would have been fine without one. I like to put it on S mode and ECT button on when towing.

I’m skeptical that Toyota would rate the truck at 3500 pounds if 3000 would cause the transmission to overheat.
