Hello everyone! I'm Terri, and new to the group, but not new to Toyota's. I recently sold my modded 07 4Runner, and of terrible regret now.
I've been looking for something new to play with and really love the body style of the 1st gen Tacoma's. Here's where I need some help. I've found one that I'm interested in. Very clean and well cared for, 4x4, color is perfect, miles are good etc... Only concern is that it's 4cyl. This could be a daily driver, but doesn't need to be. What's your thoughts and opinions on the 4cyl? I do plan to take it off-roading, but mild. I would also be using it in the winter snow.

Thanks for your help and guidance!

Thought I'd throw a picture of my recent 4Runner in that I miss terribly!

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
Sold my 4 cyl, 4x4, reg. cab, after 13 years. Never a concern with the truck. Would still be driving it, except I needed more room for the grandkids.

I'd say you won't be gunning it past anyone on the highway and can't haul/tow quite as much. Otherwise, a great motor.

My sister in law had a 1st gen 4 cyl. She loved that thing. It was great in the snow. Her only complaint was it was a little slow getting up to speed, but her nickname was turbo for a reason:D. She only got rid of it because she got an awesome deal on a tundra she was eyeing up.
Oh and hello and welcome

    Thank you!
I did go look at the truck last night and walked away quite sad. Not because I didn't get it, but because this could have been a great truck for someone . Come to find out the seller was very dishonest and not upfront about past damage and work done. Basically, the truck was purchased from a pretty good hit, if not total, and some alley mechanics got a hold of it.

Good for you that you looked it over and knew what to look for. One will come along if you aren't in a hurry. If it was me I would try a gen 2, might be easier to find but also understand if ya really like gen 1 better. And btw, welcome !

Good luck with your search. I went from a 14 tacoma to a 2003 Taco and they're fun little workhorses with plenty of fun add-ons to keep you wrenching.

If you do settle on a 4 cyl a manual tranny would go a long way to make it feel more spritely. It's lacking in pull and acceleration but the engine and powertrain are wonderful. If you find a 6, try and keep the smiling to a minimum and maintain poker face. Check the undercarriage for the normal first gen tacoma frame and body rust and then whip out the taco buyer's guide and go down the list like you're a tech.

Also, toyota has an owner's website that you can add vehicle vin numbers to as if they're your vehicles so you can check the truck's service history. Very valuable buyer's tool for used yotas.

I remember you mentioning on T4R that you wanted a tacoma. A lot of good info here, take your time you'll find the right truck.

I think since the 4cyl one I looked at this week didn't work out, I've decided to just hold out for a V6. Also, ashamed to say I don't know how to drive a manual o_O

I was teetering between the two, honestly. Between an older 4Runner or Tacoma. I think I've settled on a Tacoma. Now it's just locating the right one.

@68dave I really enjoy the look of your Tacoma posted above. Sounds like you found a great one for next to nothing!

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Won't have any problems with the 4 cylinder for what you described. If you want bigger tires and a lift then you may consider re-gearing but that's about it. I've seen 4 cylinder Toyotas turning 40" boggers before so if they can do that, anything is possible! Haha

I love my little 4 banger, honestly coming from a volvo 240 previously I thought it was pretty quick lol. Great little engine that's really easy to work on and reliable. I'd try to find a 5 speed though because I can't imagine the autos are very spunky.
Edit: saw you can't drive stick and want a 3.4, nothing bad there either. Both options are pretty good.

Well, then learn! It's easy and definitely worth it. The taco tranny is also sloppy enough that you have a great excuse for stalling at first. Now that you have the alibi, make sure you save a manual.

One of the perks of being in the automotive industry. I just bought a 1 owner 1996 4runner 4x4 for $200 with a seized 3.4. I have a complete 109k mile 3.4 out of a wrecked 2002 4runner being shipped to me now from Arizona. Can't wait to start wrenching on this project!

Are you kidding me?! That's pure luck. My husband is in the auto industry too and once in a great while a builder will come across but not as often I'd like. Wish we lived closer.
