No regrets on the engine, just wish I had waited for a 5 speed transmission. That would fix a number of issues.

My 2.7 is gutless, gutless, gutless especially at 7000 ft. But I love it anyway. Ya just have to rev 'em to get 'em to go and even then they don't get anywhere fast. I use mine for "point "A" to point "B"" and exploring the various dirt roads in the area at slow speeds because that is what they were designed for. It works just fine for that. If you want to tow and haul ass get a bigger truck with a bigger engine.

Love mine. It's a little less powerful than my 2013 6cyl but I love the mileage bump. Even with my lift and wheels

2014 Access 2.7 4x4 A/T - I have to admit its gutless....but the deciding factor was the Automatic Transmission that I can service just like the engine with routine fluid maintenance... I just can't get passed that V6 trans with no dipstick & all the contortions it would take to change the fluid, & truthfully never knowing if it was done correctly.....Even worse, getting hosed at the dealer where they can find more ways to get into your pocket...Bottom line ..No regrets what so ever....

The only time I have felt a need for the 6 cyl. was on a very steep and long 4x4 hill, other than that I'm quite happy with her. Another deciding factor would be if you have a need to tow more than 3500 lbs. - the 6 cyl. is rated up to I think 6500#.

The 2.7 in my stock RC with Michelin MS/2's can climb anything as long as it will stick to it. MS/2's are definitely NOT off road tires but I have been very surprised at where my truck will go and what it will climb. As long as it's dry. Horsepower isn't what's necessary off road. Gearing is. Unless you're into running through long and deep mud holes in which case a bigger truck, bigger engine and dedicated mud tires is in order. For just driving around in the boonies? A 4 CYL works just fine. The MS/2's are my only limiting factor when it comes to off roading for me. Mud and clay present a serious problem when it's wet. But I'm not a real serious off roader. The hard core stuff is a whole 'nother subject.

Getting up steep hills off-road or going up steep mountain grades on highways which I have to do quite a bit is the same with the 2.7. You have to rev 'em which doesn't hurt 'em. Sure, you won't hit the 500,000 mile club revving them regularly but you have to do what is necessary at the time. My owners manual implies that 2500 rpm is where you want to keep it and I do except when I just can't due to the situation. It is rare, though, that mine ever is pushed past 3000 rpm. 5th gear is worthless out on the interstate on a 7% grade. I just keep it in 4th until I get to the top which results in 3000-3500 rpm (the speed limit is 75-80 mph where I live) and I have run it up to 4500+ rpm when climbing the really steep stuff off road but only for a minute or two if that. I don't tow anything either. I have probably 500 pounds in the bed including the shell. If I was towing the rated 3500 lbs I could easily see 4000+ rpm regularly. I'd never be able to use 5th gear.
There's no way you're going to even hit the 300,000 miles club doing that regularly.

What is the reason for this horrible decision? There's no conceivable logic that I can imagine for such a lack

    You'll have to ask Toyota.

well now since the new v6 gets the same mpg as the 4 banger i do regret it. might as well have more power if the mpg's are the same.

back when i got my 4 cyl the v6 only got 17-18mpg which is as bad as a v8 full size truck.

the 4cyl is fine unless you are towing. towing up hills is where it's not very good. you have to downshift to 3rd just to make it up so long, steep hills when towing over 2500lbs.

I love my four banger. Never been in a 6 cylinder Tacoma. Probably not going to jump into one anytime soon as ill want to sell my truck and upgrade :p.

I find my 4 cylinder regular cab pretty preppy for what it is . No problems speeding 85-90 on the high way. I have to down shift while going uphill, but I got a manual trans. No issues popping it down to fourth or third gear!

I would hate an automatic. Lots of complaints from people that those are gutless. I had a friend describe my truck as peppy.... He had a 86 land cruiser. lol

I like my 2.7 4 cylinder equipped 2002 double cab pre runner . With a TRD Supercharger , K&N CAI , Doug Thorley shorty header w/ 1.5" primary tube / 2.5" collector , 2.5" cat back with 3" Spintech mufflers

The added power makes it feel like a V6 with the fuel economy of a 4 cylinder . Just hard not to keep you foot planted on the loud pedal listening to the blower whine LOL!!!

Do you have any problems passing Smog with your supercharger? I see that the URD supercharger is not CARB approved.
