Personally went froma 3.4 95 taco, to two other 3. 4 4runners then to my current daily driver a 2.4 98 taco, and love the small 2.4 the most. Actually went through one more 2.4 taco that got wrecked prior to my current.

Without question it is the 2.4 weakest, so I won't be racing anybody, but its far easier to work on maint wise, and mpg is substantially better. So much so I feel okay pushing the engine a little more, and not worry about babying it to save mpg. All the v6 vehicles had more significant issues as well that I havent on the 2.4 (but I need a few more years to put it through the wringer).

Every time I drove the 3.4 vehicles Id always think by fuel up time "dang, already?". Honestly made me not able to enjoy the drive as the needle quickly goes down for even short trips.

Also I think I may just enjoy trying to do more with less in general haha.

I'm with ya there on the MPG thing. I calculated 22ish. My old Grand Cherokee was around 16-17 summer, 14-16 winter when I'd let it idle before driving...And that's being generous. Used to watch the needle drop.

As far as pushing the 2.7...I think I push mine harder than most. I have 40,000 miles left on my warranty and I'm 21 years old, so what do you expect lol

No regrets. Love the 4 banger. It will hum along nicely, and when you need/want the power just wind it up and it will sing.

Totally agree. I had a 91 YJ with 200k+ miles.. engine was fine, frame rusted out. Replaced it with a 2000 TJ (that I oil sprayed regularly this time :)). It has 120k miles, runs flawlessly, and still has high & consistent compression numbers. It's one of the most reliable 6 cylinders, and believe the same came be said for Toyota's 2.7L.

Definitely no regrets with getting the 4cyl, it still puts a smile on my face every day I drive it. And love the fact that it's proven to require little maintenance, and when it does, it's easy to work on, and won't cost much. Not enough years have passed to say how the revised V6 will do for long term reliability, but think you can confidently say 10 years from now, it's going to be expensive to maintain.

At the risk of going way off-topic, here is a picture of my 1972 Gremlin with the big six (I missed this car more than either the 1965 or 1967 Mustangs):

Heck yeah! The 4.0 in my XJ was a beast.

I once blew the radiator out and took it on the highway knocking and rattling like crazy. Pulled into the gas station a town over and it was steaming and pouring fluids all over the parking lot, but $400 later it was back on the road as strong as ever. Actually I had the radiator go a second time. Again, fairly cheap fix and she ran strong till the day I parked it. Still felt faster off the line than my 4.7 or 2.7. Had stiff lift springs. Jolty ride but handled like it was on rails.

Parked it at 212k miles due to rust, death wobble, broken exhaust, and minor electrical issues (battery terminals, no Air conditioning, fan only worked on high, power doors didn't work). I'd start and drive it every few months but I don't think the transmission liked sitting. It wouldn't upshift when I took it down the road. Called it quits and sold it to the farmer on my road to use as a wood hauler/farm truck. He's absolutely loving it! And it makes me happy every day I see that old Heep out working harder than most pickups! When cash allows, I'll probably buy another XJ. They look meaner than the grand cherokees and are the best bang for your buck reliable 4x4 if you ask me. Pick em up inspected for about 2-4 grand all day long

    My wife can. :frusty:

She drove her '92 Jeep Cherokee some 20 miles or more with the oil light on and the temp in the red. Needed a full rebuild after that.

She also drove her 86 dodge cold many miles with the oil light on, added gas, got home and said the gas light is staying on. I said there is no gas light, that must be the oil light. Surprisingly it didn't destroy itself but it never was quite the same though we put on another 80K miles after that. MPG dropped noticeably and it used some oil.

Reminds me of the time my grandmother was so proud of herself for putting windshield washer fluid in...Until she realized the washer fluid light was still on. I'm sure you can guess what happened

i noticed most people are happy with their 4 cylinders due to the manual transmission, does this change with the elimination of the manual mated to the 4 cylinder in the 19 model year? I ask because this is what im looking at.

I have the 4 speed auto cause I really don't want to row thru gears on a Daily driver, it tends to get bogged down climbing grades and is very slow off the line, but I knew what I was getting so no regrets and I test drove it a few times before making up my mind I could deal wit it

Was unsure if the 2.7 with 4 speed automatic would be acceptable, but it had the same or better acceleration of my former ‘06 Colorado DC Z71 4x4. Ohio flatlander and don’t trailer/haul much.

I am very happy with my 2.7L AC SR5 4x4.

Your going to get varying opinions on this. Personally speaking, I like the auto, but I don't drive on alot of hills, and not putting bigger tires on it. In either of these cases, it'll be gearing down alot. (I also don't tow anything.)

Take the v6 for a drive too, see what you think.

It may also be worth noting that the transmission is sealed in both v6 and 2.7. Again, personal preference, but I hate not being able to check it.

I test drove mine also before buying so I knew what I was getting. Sometimes I turn down the stereo and listen to the putt putt of the 4 cylinder Auto and get satisfaction out of knowing that it will probably last longer than me:yes:

I actually don't mind the sound of the 4cyl. It's a big enough one to sound pretty deep...That said, it sounds nowhere near as mean as my old 4.7 v8, or my 4.0 i6 with no muffler or tailpipe
