Hello Tacoma world...new to this thread.
I've been looking at getting a Tacoma and am having a hard time deciding on a 4cylinder or 6 cylinder?? I know that I want a 4x4 extra cab 2nd generation. I really like the idea of the better mpg on the 4cylinder because I'll be driving a lot of long distance trips. Is the 4cylinder really that much more fuel efficient??
    Thank you

Welcome to TW. I recommend using fuelly.com. MPG discussions on this site tend to be all over the place. Fuelly is the real deal.

From what I have understood, 2.7 will be better if your truck stays colse to stock.

Lift, big tires, towing, all really level the playing field on mpg for the 4.0

I will say that I get 25mpg, but I drive a 5lug. I guess it would depend on how often and how long of trips.

I'm going to bet on highway trips, driving with mpg in mind, you would never miss the mpgs as much as you might miss the 100hp the rest of the time.

If you get a 4 cyl I would get it in a manual transmission.. the 4speed automatic in my regular cab can't make up it's mind especially when going up hills, if you lived in an area where it's all flat road I guess you probably could get away with it no problem. Me personally I would just get the v6, I got better MPG with the v6 than I did with the 4 cylinder.

Go with the v6, lighter foot will help with mpg.

    Driving empty = 4 banger.
    Driving loaded = V6.

Mine is a 1st gen but my 2.7 in stock form got 1-2 mpg less than the S/C'd 3.4 I had previously and the same for my current 4.0 4Runner. Takes the same amount of oil for changes as well. Unless you find a sic deal on a 2.7, get a V6.

My last truck was a V6 and I miss it, but for what I use my 2.7L for, I enjoy having less maintenance and it's easier to work on too.

    Own a 4 and a 6

If you live in flat land get 4

    If any hills get 6

I test drove a 4 cylinder once and wanted to get out and start pushing on an elevated freeway on ramp . I get why people buy them though. I had a Nissan hard body 4 banger for years and it served me well.

You should see how my 4 cyl , 4door no less , struggles from 80mph when the freeway grade goes high

It has a pucker factor for passing

It is so enemic it makes you a better driver :D

Still love it for its simplicity if nothing else

OP to your original question, fuelly shows 17.63 for 6 and right at 20 for a 4. 2014 model year.
