The pro was never on my radar, but for the regular TRD off road it boils down to this: Much more expensive for a bunch of features I don't want. A problem across most of the auto industry right now.

And the complete neutering of the access cab (or Xtracab or whatever the hell it is now) which is the spec I would want. A 5 foot bed is useless to me and the 6 foot bed + crew cab is too long. IMO a differential lock is a mandatory feature and with the Xtracab you can't have it. They even deleted the back seats??!? And then just to troll me a little harder, the manual transmission is not available on the supposedly spartan Xtracab.

Oh, and this is purely subjective but I hate the styling, especially TRD off road. HATE it. Embarassingly overmachismo in my purely subjective opinion.

I also think there should be more variety with the 6' Xtracab. The 4-door reminds me of an Explorer SportTrac. The back seats are handy on occasion, but not as handy for me as a 6' bed.

Make an Xtracab with 4WD, 6M and diff lock too? And can pull 6000+ pounds? Shut up and take my money.

I'm guessing the folks like you and me are a severe minority, so the bean-counters said not to make the truck. Maybe the bean-counters said there's not enough profit in them. I dunno.

The TRD Off Road is usually loaded up with expensive packages I don't want, and I didn't even bother looking for one. But, I found one with everything I do want (setting aside number of doors and bed length - which I can live with), and none of the stuff I don't.

    4WD with diff lock? Check
    Bilstein shocks? Check
    Nice alloys? Check
    Leather steering wheel? Check

    Options:
    Heated Seats? Check
    Mud Flaps? Check

I like the color-coded fenders of the SR5 better. I don't care about "look at me, I'm a TRD" stickers on the bed, but I can (and probably will) take them off. It was designed by an 8 year-old's idea of his favorite HotWheels truck, but I don't think it's embarrassingly overmachismo.

I, too, am blown away by how my OR handles the washboard. I've been driving trucks off the pavement for fifty years, and this truck is fantastic.

Did you add stiffer coils to the rear on your truck, or are you still stock?

I admit I may be in the minority but it is quite frustrating not to be able to buy what is, for me, the most reasonable configuration. I don't need or want heated seats (or power seats for that matter). The leather and cosmetics I don't need either. Same for auto climate control (not sure if that is bundled with off road). Meanwhile the TRD off road 4runner now has the power liftgate standard... no thank you.

But when I said ' features I don't need or want' I am also referring to things like turbo engine and the coil spring rear suspension for the TRD off road. These things cost money to add. The turbo is added complexity and cost that I just don't need. Yes there is a performance benefit from the coil springs, but for me it's not worth it when it balloons the price to what it is. We can debate this all day and will never come to an agreement, but that's how I feel.

If we're dreaming, what I REALLY want (and I know I am severely in the minority here) is a base (no TRD off road) Xtracab manual transmission with differential lock and Atrac - something that has never been available on any Tacoma I am aware of. Ranger and Colorado used to offer that spec but it's been taken away. I guess if I buy another truck I need to look at aftermarket diff lock options.

I suspect if you asked a Toyota (engine) engineer, he would say that the new inline 4-cylinder engine with its turbo is a lot less complex than the old V6 Atkinson engine the third-gen had. A lot less moving parts.

The 3rd Gen Off Road Manual Access Cab were available in Canada, that would have the locking rear and A-TRAC.

i either agree with or can't comment on the rest of your cons, but this one stuck out to me. i f'n LOVE finally having a defroster in the rear window, and absolutely had issues in the northeast winters with my 3rd gen, particularly in the mornings. perhaps you park in a garage? it is a very pleasant QOL upgrade, so i can't fathom how this makes the con list.

I think the real test is what fraction of Gen3 owners trade for Gen4. I want to stay in a Tacoma but the 4th gen electrification was disappointing (poor MPG and no 6-ft bed). Looking to a Rivian and other options as I approach 100K (flawless) miles on my '19.

I will say from my experience with my 4g so far, that the leg room issue is true. No adult (male or female) can comfortably fit in the rear seat area unless the driver and front passenger are dwarves, LOL. They are very pricey for what they are but, all new vehicles are honestly. I paid cash for mine and that took a bit of the bite out of the price since I was able to avoid the added interest associated with making payments. I personally wouldn't pay the premium for a pro just for the extra switches, crappy JBL sound system, the hybrid engine, or funky looking front seats.
I am completely happy with what came on my RWD sport I would have preferred a 4x4 but I would never use it anyways and didn't want to wait for the exact same truck I bought in the color I wanted just for a feature I wouldn't use. It would have been nice to have and not need 4x4 but it wasn't a deal breaker.

    Just starting.
3rd gen owner here, I just hate the design of the 4g, but mostly the price for what you get.... It looks decent after 5k more for bigger tires/wheels/lift, but silly without them... (giant wheel wells for the size of wheel)

For the price of a Pro, I would probably go with a ranger raptor, or chevy bison... They have more power, and you have less need to spend a bunch of money on mods immediately imo....
