The shock didn’t fail. The mount did. Bilstein made the shock. Did they also make the mount?

As far as R&D… any company that gets through the TÜV for a living, does R&D and provides data.

Toyota removed the external bump stop and went to shocks with an internal bump stop. TH/Pro and non-OR Tacomas (i.e. not using Bilsteins) haven't reported failures.

Ok, but the bump stop isn't the mount / top hat. The mount failed, not the shock or internal bump stop. Icon's video shows the shock still working fine.

    -edit-

On a different note, I went back and watched one of the videos where they were introducing the truck, and had the frame/engine display with the Fox shocks on the front and Bilsteins on the back.

The Fox setup has identical looking mounts, so I looked in the parts catalog for the OR, and the Pro lists the same part number for the mount.

I'd say it's not a Bilstein mount if it's common to other models without Bilstein.

    ,

Icon tested the shock and showed how when it was in the "bump stop zone" the forces increased significantly. If the valving for that internal bump stop functionality was off it would be like replacing your rubber or urethane bump stops with steel which would overstress down range components. Since this only appears to be happening to OR models, it could still be a Bilstein issue.

It could also be the top hats are being sourced from a supplier who may not be producing parts to spec. I'm sure Toyota engineers know how to calculate force loads and spec appropriate materials. Whether they receive what they spec and whether they test/check what they receive is another matter.

The mount broke, not the shock. The shock still worked. If the mount couldn't handle the load, that's where the engineering, testing or manufacturing failure lies; not with the maker of the shock (that Toyota also put their name on).

Given the rarity of the issue in the real world as opposed to internet gossip (which also claims Tacomas aren't selling), it was likely a manufacturing defect.

The elephant in the room is that when you drive things hard, things tend to break. Folks never want to take responsibility for their own actions, and blame others with "well, it should have...". Icon blamed Toyota for the way they drove that truck, saying "it should have...". If Icon was hitting the bump stop, Icon was at the suspension's limit. That's what bump stops are. Limiters. Icon should have not driven that fast on those bumps, and it wouldn't have happened.

And then Icon could not have created the new top hat and sold thousands to all the lemmings that assume it was a world wide problem and theirs would break as well so they bought it “just to be safe”.

    Icon is brilliant.

I have owned every gen multiple 2nd and 3rds. My last was a Pro and traded it in on the 24 offroad manual now at 27k km and enjoying every minute of it so far and I find it a better drive then all the rest. In Canada a 23 Pro was 64k now 84k. After taxes in my Province the Pro is 24k more then the 23 that's on a cash basis not financing it so that could go up to 30-35k. I couldn't justify that much of a price change maybe if I made 75-100k more a year I would have went for it. I think I paid right at 50k plus tax for my Trd offroad manual. I only financed 15k and have paid it off already so not much interest. I would say I have put about $3500 in mods in so still about 30k less then a Pro and am happy with my choice.

Update: I officially sold my 3G OR. Here's whats wierd. Our dealership here has one incoming 2025 Pro in the 2-tone black top and Terra. I thought that the Terra color was only available on the 24's and have been replaced by Mud Bath for 2025. Production is supposed to be this month. The color code is 2ZX. I guess we just have to wait. What gives?

If I had the money I'd have definitely gotten one. However, I love my SR5 4x4 as is for now. As an off-road neophyte, I can always trade it in for a higher trim level (TRD OR for example) in two/three years should I deem it necessary after dipping my toes into offroad adventuring.

Yep you got it. Jealous I don't have a good job. That's certainly why I didn't get one.

Mud bath is the exclusive color. Other colors are available. Terra is now available on other trims as well.

I saw a Mudbath Tundra yesterday. I’m not normally a fan of tan or brown trucks but it looked interesting. Can’t wait to see one that I can walk around and inspect the paint up close.

He seems very angry, why can't we all get along? I love the looks and everything about the TRD Pro, just went a different direction. But I guess I have to go and drive my POS now, maybe have a good cry about it too.:anonymous:

For years, if not decades, Tacomas were panned for not having this feature, that item and being underpowered. The 4th gen comes with nearly everything they'd been asking for plus plenty of low-end torque and high-end power. I guess we should have known that there would be a different group(s) of haters. Some don't like the aesthetics (understandable), some take issue with a specific feature (like the seats in the Pro) and there's a large slice of people that are considered strong resisters to change. By definition, someone who struck out and bought the first model year of a 4th gen is an early adopter. People highly resistant to change are risk adverse. Early adopters are risk seeking. They find little common ground to agree on.

Although I don't wholly disregard the jealousy argument, I don't give it a lot of weight. ATMO most people see things that they can't afford as a worthy goal to aspire to. There's a lot more people who admire and desire a Ferrari (or Porsche turbo, vacation home, hunting lodge....) than can afford one. Using language describing people who don't like something as jealous douchebags is symmetric to describing someone who bought a Pro as a-fool-and-his-money.

    Back to our civil discussion.

Jealousy is absolutely a huge part of it. They want it but can't get it so then they have to make it seem bad and that they didn't want it anyways to feel better about themselves.

If they really weren't interested in it they would just not talk about it. but people can't help but be toxic towards anything 4th gen. gotta go to a 4th gen specific forum to have reasonable discussions without some 3rd or 2nd gen owner coming in and smearing shit all over the thread.

More than I need but still not enough.
Careful speaking the truth. I got silenced in another thread for saying pretty much this same thing. I think some of the mods may be past gen owners that fall into that group.

He will do just fine. Epic first posts. He sounds like a great guy and a great addition to the forum. He even knows the exact reason everyone didn't buy a Pro as well as most on here have shitty jobs and are poor since the majority don't own one. He is made out for TW.
