I just bought a 2020 TRD Sport last month with a MT replacing my 2007 FJ Cruiser (frame rot) with a MT. I drive a lot on the beach fishing on Long Island (hence the frame rot)
I was a little leary about the dial to engage 4Lo, the FJ had a second shift for the transfer case
and I never had a problem engaging 4Lo. I have yet to experience a smooth transition to 4Lo just by turning the dial once in my new Tacoma.
I’ve read a few solutions but ultimately, what I need to do is from a full stop depress clutch, be in neutral, switch to 4Hi then go forward 2mph while buzzer sounds switch to 4Lo, stop, switch back to 4Hi then switch back to 4Lo to engage.
I realize the buzzer indicates things aren’t going smoothly but what the hell???
I would appreciate anyone advising me.

My 08 does something like that also. If I'm in going to go in 4Lo I usually have to go or be in 4Hi first, make sure I'm in neutral, depress clutch then press clutch again and hold, then turn the knob into 4Lo and it should engage. If you don't follow those steps right then the truck goes nuts with beeping and doesn't engage 4Lo. Its a bit of a pain but I try to do it once a week to make sure everything is moving. You get used to it eventually.

It's been probably a year or so since I last engaged 4lo, it's such a PITA and an exercise in frustration to get it to work I haven't messed with it. :annoyed: Usually I use the RZR or Gator in the woods but I guess I ought to trouble shoot it.

I find that letting the slack off the drivetrain helps. (Let the truck come to rest on its own)
That way there isn’t any tension on any gears.
Also, Going from Drive to Reverse helps. Kind of like rocking the truck.

Basically you are trying to get it to “slip” into 4Lo.

Switch to 4hi first, then come to a stop and depress the clutch and switch to 4lo. No need to be in neutral.

I've had intermittent issues with it myself. What works for me is engaging 4hi while moving (I push the clutch in, but speed doesn't matter). That allows 4Hi to go in usually without issue. Them come to a complete DEAD stop and engage 4Lo. Hopefully that helps you out.

that's the key there. If you try and go from 2hi to 4lo directly, it doesn't like that. And shifting into 4hi is easier on the drivetrain while moving but without acceleration, as it allows everything to line up easier.

Make sure your clutch pedal is to the floor. I had that issue on my 2008 5 spd.

Yes, the clutch pedal needs to be all the way to the floor.

Just turn the front wheels slightly to one side or the other and it will engage/disengage.
