Good lord..... The 4WD system on the Tacoma/ 4-Runner is extremely stout and will last forever as long as you don't do anything stupid (such as making a tight turn in 4WD on dry blacktop and biding up the drive train).

Because of where I live, my Tacoma spends 3-4 months/year in 4WD. We see tons of snow weekly in the winter, and our roads are never clear in the winter. Heck, I actually needed 4WD due to snow 3 weeks ago today.

In the summer, I use 4 LO a couple of times a week to pull trailers up steep inclines.

The 4WD systems in these trucks are very stout and work flawlessly once they are broken in. If you never use 4WD, 4 LO, or the rear locker, then they can be sticky until they are broken in.

My previous 4 new trucks were Nissan Frontiers/ Xterras, and the 4WD system in those trucks were equally reliable and stout. Don't be afraid to use the system. It will hold up fine as long as you don't do something stupid like take a sharp turn on a dry parking lot. -Z
