So I have a 2017 TRD off-road manual, I went to climb a hill and didn’t have enough power to go up and had to switch it to 4lo. But my brother has a automatic and was able to go up on 4hi with no issues.

So every time I go uphill do I have to put it in 4lo to climb?

You should have been able to do it even better than the auto tranny - your gear ratio is lower! Did you try 1st gear or 2nd.

Why did you think you didn't have enough power?

Yes, autos have the benefit of the torque converter that allows some slippage between the transmission and engine. At low speeds they aren’t connected directly but through a drum of fluid and fan-like blades. On a manual trans you really need to pay attention to what lies ahead and make sure you’re in the right gear.

I was in 1st gear and as I was climbing the rpm would drop then stall. Before I switched to 4lo, I started it back up, put the ebrake and started to ride the clutch until I got at 2000 rpm, once I release the ebrake and let go of the clutch, the rpm would drop and I would stall. Then I switched to 4lo and it was a easy climb

I can assure you, it's your driving, not your manual!

It's got the power. You just stalled it. Might as well go to 4Lo if you're gonna be slow crawling though. Will be easier and less wear on the clutch.

Maybe your brother used his Crawl Control, which the manuals certainly don't have.

    This.

Even most of the pro drivers use autos in their custom rock crawler rigs where they can choose any transmission.

Wait... you were wheeling with your AC on?

That's against bro code bro, must open windows so mud and dirt fly in. Then you get to go to the car wash and show off your new pin stripes..just sayin.

I do feel like this engine lacks the low end torque to climb in 4hi without roasting the clutch a bit - i have always driven manuals and definitely struggle offroad with this one a bit more than my past tacomas. I use 4lo much more often than i used to, and have just accepted that i will be replacing the clutch earlier than i have in the past. I usually have to run 4lo on the beach or pulling the boat out of the water as well (its possible, but that sweet smell of clutch just isnt for me).

You clearly don't understand how a torque converter works.
Gearing doesn't mean shit compared a torque converter and its ability for torque multiplication.

There is nothing wrong with using 4Lo. There is a lot of speed range there also. 6th gear is almost 60mph at redline. Half that is more than enough for most anything. The crawling pace of 1st at idle is what makes it all great compared to the AT, not to mention the easy coasting descents with the MT.
