I dont know if there is any merit to this - but i was told that 5/6 are over drive gears and you shouldn't run 4lo in 5th or 6th since they are "weaker gears" - or atleast at any real load. Actually i think it was from one of the Ronnie offroading in southern Australia videos. Great series and a bunch a sweet land cruisers - dream truck there.

I completely agree. Same for towing in 2Hi.

Just considering the PITA of swapping between 4Hi and 4Lo, 5th and 6th give you some speed range between rough sections if you need it. Everything in moderation. :D

    Triggered much?
An auto will beat a manual off road any day of the week, even with the best driver.

I totally agree with outkast I have the manual tranny and no problems at all in 4hi don't be afraid to give it some gas. The other trick is to us the handbrake to help so the truck wont roll backwards on steep hills and its easier to engage the clutch while giving it gas. It just takes practice. The other part of it is getting used to A-Trac and all the other goodies the truck has to offer.

The main problem I have with the gearing is that reverse is complete shit on a steep hill. Its the only time I use 4lo when not wheeling.

Plus you can't rock yourself back and forth effectively with an auto. Very useful self recovery technique.

Turning the traction control off helps big time. Wheels may slip of you're too aggressive but it's better than losing the clutch!

    Steep hill= 4 low 2nd Gear
    Really steep hill= 4 low 1st Gear
Really steep hill with loose rocks or sand=4 low with ATRAC on.

Turn off 4 low when you get to the top and cruise away.
That’s how I do it at least.

4lo is your friend offroad. Don't be afraid to go into higher gears while remaining in 4lo if you're in between obstacles. I'll go as high as 4th gear in 4lo before I just stop and switch back to 4hi.

It's just so much handier creeping along with minimal to no clutch work rather than fry the clutch.

When you get stuck, I am sure there will be plenty of auto guys to pull you out. I myself have had both too. I will leave the manuals to the sports cars because I don't like shifting dump trucks.

This thread is ridiculous. It’s a well known fact (from Wikipedia for fuck sakes) that only real men drive a manual. They use oak trees for tooth picks and their dicks average 2”-3” longer than guys who drive automatics. I hope to one day have 3 pedals.
