I mainly only use my 4WD system driving in mud. I always find myself using 4WD Hi. I have a TRDOR which has the MTS, crawl control, and rear locker which only works in 4 LO. It seems to me that 4LO is just to slow in these trucks to use it. I feel like my truck has enough power to just run 4 HI in mud and was wondering if any of you other taco owners especially ones who mainly drive in mud feel like 4 HI is all they need and 4 LO is just to slow and really not needed.

Too poor to list anything interesting.
4lo is better for crawling, engine braking downhill, and generally anywhere where more power is needed vs speed.

Yes but I am not around steep inclines just good old flat ground and mud. I can crawl through the mud but it just seem so slow doing it

If you're able to get through the mud in 4Hi you don't need the rear locker or crawl control.

If you're stuck and need the locker or crawl control, then 4Lo is infinitely faster than sitting still.

    4lo has its place

My main gripe is why can't I use MTS in 4hi?

IMO MTS should work with 4hi

I agree and it would also be nice if the rear locker worked in 4Hi if needed

Nah there's not a practical reason for a daily driver taco to need a rear locker in 4hi

It would be nice to have the ability to lock the rear in 2wd though

100% agree. Not sure why it is restricted to 4Low. I was having a hell of a time getting my locker to lock the last time I used it, too. Then the flashing locker light would not go off until I turned my truck off.

It Saves toyota money by limiting rear locker use/exposure to damage.

Serious? Did it lock then when you go to turn it off, it started blinking then never stopped until you turned the truck off?

yup i never got it to lock! i had the light go solid for a min once as soon and i drove off started blinking again! the only way to stop the blinking is to kill the car then start back up! i thought maybe its me, mybe the terrain need to be very soft to allow the tires to spin freely and allow to lock in place idk...
4 hi, 4 low crawl control, mts all work great!

I know you said it started blinking when you drove off, but were you going 5 mph or above when this happened?

With mine I noticed that I had the rear locker engaged (solid light) and drove off but once I went above 5 mph the light went to a (fast blink) and would not stop until I turned off the truck and restarted.

Edit: I've noticed 4 light states: Off / On (Solid) / Blink / Fast Blink

No as soon as I let my foot off the break it started blinking again! I didn't notice any direct speed in the blink! I tried it about 4 times so far all on gravel roads tried neutral park reverse forward back again in reverse never really heard it click or engage. I might need someone to show me how to get it to lock!

Honestly, to get it to lock, you should be in 4LO, Push the clutch in (M/T only) then press the locker button. It will start to flash on the dash, if it does not lock in like 5 seconds, creep forward for a foot or two until it is solid. Then you should be good to go. I hear the locker does not work in reverse, though.

I might test it out again this weekend. Find some mud or snow and go for it. I really hope it works, I do not want Toyota dealerships messing around with my locker...
