had the same thing happen to me... took it to the dealer and they didn't really want to help me with it. facebook came in handy when i left a pretty bad review on theor page about poor customer service and told them i was going to buy stickers for my truck saying "toyota of -------- sucks... do not buy anything there"... needless to say, the manager called me, gave me a new car for the mean time and replaced the actuator and problem fixed!! i didn't pay a penny!!

The actuator on the t-case is sealed fairly well from the elements, but open to the body of the t-case. For some reason, condensation from the t-case builds up in the actuator resulting in a yellow sludge that gums up the contacts in the switch. I took mine apart and cleaned it the first few times it happened, but got tired of it not working when I needed it. I converted my taco t-case to manual shift by rigging up a cable (like a boat shifter) to pull on the shift shaft. I also locked my ADD and unplugged it, now it works everytime. Forget the dealer fix it yourself.

Just found out it is the computer behind the glovebox. The dealership said it was covered under the power train warranty and should be in Friday

Wasn't sure if everyone knows or not but the front diff actuator is also covered under the power train warranty now. Wish I would have waited to have mine fixed...600$ later. That's what was causing my blinking lights. They also have an updated part available

good to know. although if toyota told you its an updated part i wouldn't be surprised if its a lie. I hope that really does fix your problem. mine was replaced and i still have the problem, but now they have voided my warranty.

Yes on the computer and the actuator is exactly like every other make US truck only more expensive. GM's S10 used to use a vacuum actuator and a cable that was a pretty strange arrangement all so. I really like my new Taco but would kill for the lock out hubs and hand-o-matic FWD shifter out of my 97.

I went to test drive a 2007 TRD Off Road today-light started to blink when I was driving it-couldn't get it off- owner said it was not doing it this morning, he had just washed it, knew I coming to look at it after lunch. Made an offer got a counter offer, I said to call me after light was fixed, came home read these posts, looks like I am not to be a taco owner now, just a lurker on this forum. Thanks guys looks like this tread has saved me a bunch of frustration & money. I really liked the truck 100,000km, great shape.

My 2012 TRD does this,I wait for a straight stretch and switch it to 4wd and back to 2wd and the light goes out.I live a longway from a dealership so I will have to wait until I get into town to have it fixed.I miss locking hubs, simple and reliable and if you are too lazy to get out and switch them you deserve to get stuck.

That sounds like 4wd position switch got wet:confused: it's $5 part usually just needs cleaning.
BTW I bet 90% people complaining here have switch problem only. However when you replace actuator you replace switch too. Those things leak after some period time.

OK Guys, here is the issue with these trucks. There are multiple sstems working with each other when you twist that switch. Two of them have moving parts. The t case actuator and the front diff actuator. If one is not working the other will not work. Now rarely, and I do mean VERY rarely will the switch itself or the cpu, ever fail. It's most likely going to be one of the actuators.

I have found that when the dealers, some dealers, change one one these, they dont fully understand how they work with each other. Sometimes they will replace the t case actuator, flip the switch and the light just blinks at them. If they would have taken the time to put the truck in gear and move it forward a bit they would find that it works. Thats the biggest thing I've found when people change these things. Just because it is electronic, it dosen't mean they don't need to be aligned before they will lock and the blinking light goes out. I found this out while working with the FJ case's and a seperate switch for the ADD on these trucks.

Start with the actuator at the front diff and then go to the actuator at the t case. It's more than likely it's going to be one of those. But remember to move the truck or engage the drive train to get everything to lock before you dissmiss anything. Those actuators are very expensive, up to $1,000.00 depending on where you get them and you dont want an after market one. Make sure you get a good used one or one from Toyota.

There was someone named Christopher Santos who emailed me with an issue with his truck concerning the actuator but when I try to return his email, it won't go through because it says the domain is not configured right.

If someone knows who this is please ask him to email me with another working email address so I can answer his question. Thanks,

    Wyatt

He did a SAS on an 08 Tacoma

My truck went in for a third time for this. The first coupletimes they found nothing. Took it to a different dealer 30 miles away. They tested the diff actuator and found it not to be functioning proprlerly they will be replacing it tomorrow. $650 parts, labor, and diagnostics

Expensive part and not sealed for shit. I plan on taking mine apart and using some ultra grey for a gasket and put it back together.
