The actuators are sealed fairly well from the elements, but for some genius reason they are ported to the T-case/front end. The condensation from the T-case or front end heat cycle forms on the electrical contacts and corrodes them. I have taken apart several that all had water in the grease that coats the worm gear as well as the contacts, and all had corrosion on the contacts and deep pitting. All had an unbroken external seal and clean electrical plugs. Maybe some sort of inline dryer dealio on the vent lines would help? I dunno. Cleaning the contacts (remove three 10mm bolts that hold the black plastic cover on) will bring it back to life for a while, and soldering over the pitting will help but it will fail again down the road with either of these repairs. Just a good trail fix to put in your holster. You can also manually shift both in a pinch. Pull the shift shaft the T-case actuator is attached to all the way out for 4-lo, one click in for 4-hi, and all the way in for 2HI. You also have to slide the sleeve over the front actuator by removing the four 12 point bolts that hold it onto the axle and manually slide it towards the passenger side. If you don't only the driver front will pull in 4wd. Your dash will blink and beep but it will get you back to asphault.
