You can't get enough speed in 1st in 4Lo in the six speeds. 2nd and 3rd gear are the sweet spot for power and wheelspin in 4Lo with the 6spd.

Unless I'm crawling up or down a hill. I typically start in 2nd when I'm in 4Lo.

To the OP, my suggestions is to avoid "mudding." It's all around horrible for your truck (i.e more chances to break things), and it's a pain in the ass to clean afterwards. Mud gets EVERYWHERE. Leave that for the redneck Domestic drivers.

I really loved mud for about two months and two rear wheel bearings later.:D I still enjoy a good mud puddle but not more "Mudding", only when its on a trail.

I bought my truck to use as a truck also. I use it for offroading, I just try to avoid bogging through deep mud holes and I don't go wheeling when it's really muddy. I wait for it to dry out a little bit. I find it annoying to have to pull out the pressure washer to clean the truck everytime is get's muddy.

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
I try and avoid the mud as much as possible but when I do 4low in 2nd is the way to go maybe 3rd but 2nd should get the job done in most mud holes.

I vote 4HI. I would think you want more wheel-spin in the mud, so you can keep cutting through the mud. 4lo = less wheel-spin with lower gearing. 4HI allows the wheels to spin faster, thus keeping momentum. I use 4lo on muddy trails and rocks, where you do not want a lot of slip and you must crawl.

Momentum is your friend but there is such a thing as too much momentum. Unless you like getting buried...then hammer down haha.

" If your a 6spd..." Auto's produce more heat, and have more slip so I could understand the necessity of 4lo. Just Youtube Mudbog. Most of those guys have high gearing with a lot of HP, using 4hi to keep the tires spinning fast. Tire spin in Mud = M/T's can clean themselves out much better. Less = clogged tread. What about when you lose your speed if it is a long pit? shifting is just going to slow you down and then your stuck.

In Mud speed is the Key, You see it all the time with BigBlock V8 trucks w/ nitrous. Gotta keep the tires cutting and the momentum going forward. Just my $.02

think it has a lot to do with the "mud". If there's hardpan you will sink a little but end up on solid ground. In that mud you really don't have to be careful. On the other hand, If there's no hardpan tire spin is gonna dig you down to the frame. I guess you have to adjust you strategy to the conditions of the trail. I never assume the mud hole is going to be solid underneath. If you start to sink down you want back out and find another approach.
As far as mud pits go I know the guy that builds the Castleford Idaho Mud bog and there's actually a lot of work that goes into building those pits. He normally farms that ground but he never does any deep tillage so the hardpan stays intact. If there was no compaction those big powered trucks would be stuck in 3 seconds. Kind of an anticlimactic show. Haha.

I like the guys out West saying 4Hi. :D Here in the Midwest and Southeast where there is mud, 4lo is what you want to use.

With a manual or an auto being in 4lo and 2nd/3rd gear you can get through some gnarly stuff, save 1st for creepin.

Your tires are the most important part since you wont be going very far if you are running AT's of any kind.
