When my 4lo is engaged on my truck, I was having a hard time getting above like 5mph and the truck just seemed to be lagging. This was while on a gravel road with some snow. I did read the manual and couldn't find the top speed while in 4lo. Also, when should I be using 4lo compared to 4hi? Sorry for all the dumb questions but I couldn't find specific answers.

It's like 48 MPH. I use it all the time going up to tower sites on the mountains (pretty rough access roads)

How fast are you typically driving in 4lo? I have a automatic and it seems hard for it to shift out of the lower gears. Not sure if this is normal.

You say its an auto. Are you in 4 low with the tranny in D or in L. Sounds like you may be in 4 low and L which wont' be good for much more than 5 mph

I did the normal procedure and put it in drive. While driving in 4hi i didnt have any issues. Could it be that i was on a flat gravel road? The manual said its for hills and rocky terrain i didnt know if that made a difference. I felt like i had to stomp on the gas to get it going and it wouldnt shift till the rpms were higher.

It will hold revs longer before shifting. Being on flat ground shouldn't change anything and you shouldn't need to stomp on the gas, just accelerate slowly and it should shift.

It being that you seem newer to the tacoma and have a 2012, I would imagine everything is operating normally.

Well, I don't really see the point in using 4LO on a flat gravel road anyways.

The only time I ever use 4LO the truck is going like... a crawl, try not to think of 4LO about how fast you can go.. but how slow you can go down a hill or how you can crawl up a hill without bogging down, thats what its made for.

I'm sure your 4LO is fine

Also to answer the second part of your original question. 4hi is generally used for higher speed off roading through the desert/ snowy conditions. Where 4low is more for rock crawling, climbing steep hills or down steep hills.

Because the gods of gearing says so. 4lo in l stays below 5 and 4lo in 2 stays below 10. And DAC keeps the truck in a crawl on a very steep hill.

lol only once and I was so excited to be on a trail that I thought needed it I didn't pay attention to how it handled/reacted.

I was just seeing what the 4lo is like since the truck is still new to me. This is my first ever truck so im trying to get used to what is/isnt normal.

If I would drive through sand like on a beach I would want to use 4hi, no?

Thanks all, im having lots of fun driving around the Mt. scouting new hunting spots.

Well if you've never driven in 4LO before , it will definitely feel strange

The low gearing is an odd sensation at first , great for limiting speed on steep decents
