Having mods added to the list isn't automatic. Send a PM to piercedtiger and provide a link for him (he maintains the thread). I did that for the mods I did. :)

4lo-TRAC should definitely be on the list!

For those of you that do not want to cut the wire, it is very easy to remove the yellow wire from the connector. It takes about two minutes and no cutting. I'm going to barrow a link from another TW member and go to page 3 for a picture of the connector. First remove the negative battery wire. Remove glove box. Then remove the connector. On the side on the connector there is rectangle shaped clip on the same side as the yellow wire. There are two small slots. Use a screwdriver to pry these two area up they should pop up about 1/16 of an inch. Do not remove the clip. The wires are now loose but still held in place by a small tab inside the connector. Use a sewing needle to pry up on the small tab that is holding the wire in place and gently pull on the wire at the small time and out it should come out. Use some electrical tape to tape off the end of the wire and you are done. http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h5.pdf

I spent 20 minutes attempting to do it that way. In theory it's the better way, in practice it's a hassle, and you risk damaging the harness, and leaving obvious evidence that you have tampered with something. Whereas when you cut the wire, it is hidden in the factory looking tape.

Maybe I got lucky. I was surprised how fast and easy it was. It took me about 2 minutes to get it out and it left no marks. You can't tell that it has ever been fooled with. If I need to take it to the dealer I can just push the wire back in. I didn't want to cut any wires since my truck is still under warranty. This is one of the best and easiest mods. This mod needs to be Sticky. Nice find Isthatahemi.

I just read all 11 pages. Took me about 1 hour. I am headed to the beach this week and need to get this done before I leave.
    Thanks for finding this.

I wonder if more stealthy way to do this modification would be to disconnect the yellow wire at its' source which I am guessing is the 4X4 selector switch on the dash. My hope is that it might be a simple connection that could be unplugged. It would be like a factory quality control defect that we would have no knowledge about.

If the connection is bundled with other wires into a single plug then perhaps the wire could be pulled out, the exposed part of the wire cut and the insulated wire stuck back in so there is no connection. Again a factory quality control defect.

its not on the selector switch.

i believe it goes to another connector, not isolated.

Thanks Yoytoda you saved me from removing my selector switch.

What if one were to move the pin out of way/fold it over and then plig the connector back in?

I tried moving the pin but it kept springing back over, so I just cut the wire and tucked it in where the wire bundle is taped.

Before I cut the wire I turned the key on and placed it in neutral, I put it in 4H and heard it engage then I turned it to 4x4 L and heard it engage. I then turned off the key and cut the wire and placed it in 4 H and 4 L back and forth and could clearly hear it engaging properly. The 4x4 light does blink when in 4L but I don't think that is a bad thing.

    Great information on this forum.

I know the thread's getting moldy ... but.. got to ask

This wouldn't be the same signal wire that everyone is trying to wire the opposite way to get rid of ABS in other modes other than 4low is it?

I could see that maybe, that this wire signals something to turn off the ABS in 4 low, and now doesn't. Leaving you with ABS in 4 low where it does not from the factory.

Is it a different wire? If so... has anyone figured out how to do the ABS remove in the 09-10 without removing VSC and TRAC? It seems, from my reading that the current ABS mod would kill this mod. But again, its late and its a lot to read, and a lot of threads with misleading titles pre 09 vs 09+.. I may be confused.

It is not the same wire, and I do not believe it activates the ABS system in 4L. But I no longer own the SR5, and someone else will have to answer this......

just figure if the system is so confounded as to not be able to switch the 4wd light, it might still have abs.. and abs almost always sucks.. Well.. Every time I've had it activate, its always been unwanted. Guess its an easy test... cut the wire, find some wet grass and try to stop in 4wheel low. Should be quite obvious if its still engaged or not. If I ever bother with the wire thing... (its always there to cut if I need to and have motorcycle for real off roading) I'll post it up.

But yea.. I am pretty close to just trying to permanently kill the ABS at all speeds and conditions. I'll take stopping over slowing down any day. Only thing stopping me is questionable liability should something happen, and the drive to figure it out.

Are you saying that 4lo DOES disengage ABS??

I hadn't been able to find anything to say that it does, and I was looking forward to the day (not really) when I would try to lock up the brakes in 4lo and get hosed instead.

If that's the case - not sure it's a good tradeoff. Unless you wire in a switch easy access to the driver. TRAC/ABS ON for slippery climbs, TRAC/ABS OFF for descents.

According to the tech sheet the ABS is only off when the rear differential is locked. In Low Range the VSC and TRAC is off, not the ABS brakes...

Ah.. looks like I should have read this sheet instead of someone else's post.. it appears that ABS is always on in a non TRD OR truck, since i don't have a diff lock button. At least after 2008.
Well then, that makes it even more interesting. I'm a bit of a motoring purist. i don't mind some "safety" stuff. Traction control works great on these trucks and is welcome 90% of the time. But this tacoma isn't my 80s trucks or 99.. its a robot that takes me where I want to go. I've got the helm mr sulu.. you can take 5 and let me drive for a while. I've not had much experience with abs in snow (it wasn't available on most things back when I lived in snow), but it seems like, if its anything like rain, it'd be downright scary (at least at first), and i'm not 18 any more, but it also seems like its no fun.

Someone could build and market a module and I'd buy that. But I bet its hot-wireable with the right knowhow.
