Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
should just affect the TRAC in 4lo and nothing else. since i have mine switched, i always keep it normaled up except for when i need it.

Im on break at work and dont have time to read all 27 pages. im going wheeling next week and want to do this mod. my question is does this mod work, and is there any down sides to it?

also is there a thread on wiring it to a switch?

This mod works fantastic! I just hit a hill a couple days ago that I couldn't pull in 4-HI and with 4-LO and this mod, I was able to crank right up it. I pulled the wire last winter and taped it off rather than cut or run to a switch, and I've seen no downside whatsoever yet.

I haven't done the mod myself (yet) but i think bumpkin1 articulated the side-effect of doing this mod.

A downside I can see is if TRAC controls engine output. I don't remember if 09+ TRAC does or not.

trac only regulates engine output in 2wd. 4hi it does not.

Perhaps not, but VSC does and if you get your shit fishtailing enough in 4hi with enough wheelspin to fool the truck into thinking you're over 30mph (muddy hill, for example), it will cut your engine. I wish we had a true killswitch for it. I can think of at least two hill climbs I could've made if VSC/TRAC hadn't kicked in and killed my engine.

Why in the world would you do this mod? You want to downgrade your performance or something?

Either? Both? I'm still trying to figure out why you would even want to in the first place?

If you have A-Trac you do not need to do it. A-Trac works the same only better. In 4 lo just hit button. None off- road models have no traction control in 4 lo. This mod gives it to them.. That is why OZ said no.

Works like a champ. Tried it out today and all worked just as reported. I went out and found some soft sand and it worked like a charm in 4LO. Once the wheels started to spin, this kicked in and we plowed right through.

OK, read most of these pages, I think I got it.
    I am getting a 2013 TRD SPORT (NO A-TRAC)

2WD normal- VSC (corrects for under and oversteer conditions)
TRAC applies brakes to slipping REAR wheel and limits engine rpm's when slipping rear wheel is detected

2WD TRAC OFF (Pressing VSC button-short press)
VSC is OFF (no correction for over or understeering)
TRAC is OFF (No engine limiting when rear wheel slip is detected)
AUTO LSD is ON (applies brake to one of rear wheels if slip condition is sensed)

2WD VSC OFF (Holding VSC button down for 3 seconds)
VSC, TRAC, and AUTO LSD all off. (Esentially an open rear dif...one wheel drive)

    4WD HI NORMAL
    VSC -ON
TRAC - ON (NO engine power limiting in 4WD HI mode. Sensors will sense and apply a brake to a slipping wheel in BACK and/or? in FRONT) this will apply a brake to a sliiping front wheel right?

4WD HI VSC OFF (Holing button down for 3 seconds) (pushing VSC putton does nothing just holding it down does?)
VSC and TRAC OFF (like having 2 open diffs)

    4WD LO
VSC and TRAC are both OFF (Having 2 open diffs)

IF I do the yellow wire magical snip, I can re-activate TRAC in 4WD LO mode correct?

When in 4WD LO mode, with the yellow wire snipped, do I still have VSC (understeer and oversteer protection?)

With the yellow wire snipped, in 4WD LO the light will flash, but no buzzer should sound correct?

Does TRAC apply brakes to front wheels as well when in 4WD modes if it senses a slipping front wheel?

Has anyone tried this mod in a 2013 TRD SPORT, or SR5 for that matter (same system)

One last question...I know it's only an opnion question, but I'm still curious.
Do you guys notice a smoother highway ride with the TRD SPORT than with the SR5 (especially when not hauling anything or just towing something light)

Thanks in advance for any/all answers

Just to let everyone know (if it hasn't been mentioned) I pulled the yellow wire on my 2013 regcab 4wd I got on saturday and the TRAC in 4-low works perfectly, just like all previous model years. Its not as aggressive a traction aide as ATRAC on my TRD OR but it's a vast improvement to 4-low with the wire in-place. BEST 5 minute mod period.

    Good to hear!

It really is clear that 4WD (Hi or Lo) works better with traction control (limited slip)... Just as soon as you leave pavement, tires will slip and if power normally goes to the tire that slips the easiest (open differentials), you are both not moving with full efficiency, but also burning more gas than needed.
Traction Control (TRAC/AUTO LSD) diverts more power to the tire(s) that have better contact with the ground (ie. have traction) to keep you moving!

Anyone with 4WD who does not have the OFF ROAD TRD can benefit from this mod whenever they are in low range. The OFF ROAD TRDs have A-TRAC in low range, an even firmer limited slip than TRAC. A-TRAC actually matches rotation (or 'locks') the spinning tire(s) to the traction tire(tires).
