I have a Focal speaker system and Alpine PDX V9 amp, and the amp is a little overpowered for the speakers. (100W RMS/ channel, speakers are 70W RMS) I believe 8ohms produces better sound quality than the 4ohms im currently running, is it possible to make this an 8ohm setup? If i can change my wiring and get this i really wanna try it.

If you have dual 4 ohm coils then yeah, you can do that. Otherwise no. But I wouldn't worry about going over that much. You're close enough.

Thanks for the reply... i thought the same when i put it together but the speakers pop and crack, too much bass. The speakers are surely not DVC so ill just stick to what i have.

8ohm won't give you any better sound quality. While it's true it doubles the distortion this is more from a mathematical standpoint and not from a human hearing perception. The levels we are talking are inaudible anyway.

If I was you I'd actually welcome the extra power. Remember, even though your amp makes a specific amount of power, it only does that at full tilt. This is how different volume levels are achieved when you turn the volume knob. More power creates more volume, less power, less volume. Most people don't realize it, but even if you have a gigantic amplifier, most of the time you're listening to 4 watts of power at most.

If your speakers are being overdriven it's likely you're using them to play frequencies that are too low. I'd recommend using a high pass (HP) filter on the amp and setting it around the 40-50hz mark to strip away some of the bass in those channels. That will protect the speakers.

    Unknow

running an amp on 8 ohm load would most likely result in you driving the amp harder to get wanted volume out of it...
Just run it 4 ohms, keep it clean

A little headroom is a good thing. Going to an 8 ohm R load is not a good solution. Sounds like you need to clean up your amp feed.

Your amp is 100W RMS in a perfect scenario but not likely real world application. You should be totally fine running that amp with your speakers. And somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there's any tonal difference between 4 ohm and 8 ohm impedance.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I think the real issue here is Focal speakers. I have to have the High Pass filter at like 80hz or higher, otherwise the speakers distort real bad. Even if not distorting, the bass is flat and punchy. I know these speakers should not put out much bass, that's what my sub is for, but these speakers just have no mid range at all, so my stereo is alot of high pitch treble and low bass, no mid range.

I set out to make an amazing FULL sound system with amazing SQ, and Focal definitely didn't give me that. And yes i tune and tune and tune.
