i really was set on the 4runner But I saw the expedition and am wondering what should be my deciding factor. I do have a wife and baby. And am looking to spend no more than 30,000. What makes the the 4Runner better.

Well first, Ford vs toyota, toyota wins the reliability IMO. Second, you are comparing a more luxury SUV (ford) with a more adventure style SUV (4Runner). Nothing about the 4runner is special. It is a rugged, mildly-gas guzzling, mid sized SUV ready for most any adventure you could want. The interior is dated, but simple, and still has most everything you could want. I dont know enough about the newer expedition to say anything about it, but I love my 4runner and wouldn't trade it for the world. That being said, I offroad a decent bit, and have modded mine and still have more mods to come.

If you have any questions about the 4runner, feel free to ask. Also check out t4r.org or 4runners.com, there is tons of info on those websites.

By saying you just saw the expedition I would assume that means the new one. The answer is easy, you can’t get either for under 30,000.

I say 4 runner, I've had a few and still got one today. Have you decided that you're gonna leave it stock or build it? At the end of the day it's your money man, but I can say I've seen way more runners catch air in the sand and drive away with the whole family laughing and smiling then I've seen expeditions. I've seen one expedition in my life catch air so far, it also had a family in it. And after it came down the family did not seem so impressed, maybe it was because the frame was broken in half maybe it was because they weren't in a Toyota. Point being they're both good family rigs, and while whichever you choose may never see air time I'm sure either will serve you well.

New fords are same as new toyotas for reliability in my opinion.

For putting kids in a 4Runner, it lacks cupholders and only has the 2 rear air vents at back of the center console. In comparison, my Highlander has 4 overhead air vents in back. Makes a huge difference on hot days for the kids.

    Just something to consider.

The 4Runner is one of the last Toyotas made for the American market that is still manufactured in Japan. It's EXTRA reliable. And you can find early 5th gens with <100k miles for <$25k all day. That's what I did. I've had a blast building it out and maintaining it. Great vehicle. My three kids love it, too...especially when we take it off pavement.

This is my one major gripe with the 5th gen 4Runners...there should be rear air vents overhead at least for the 3rd row models. But three Diono carseats can fit safely across the second row, so even if you have a couple of kids, do you need the 3rd row? Maybe if they fight a lot in the car it would be good to be able to spread them out. I think the 3rd row is only good for young kids anyway...those jump seats are tiny!

    I have 4 petite kids.
3 carseats across middle and a booster in 3rd row.

Need for 3rd row is why i had to give up my tacoma.

Which alcoholic would you rather support every week ?
An engine is like an alcoholic so who do you want to buy for, a six pack or an 8 pack drinker ?
What do you "need" now or in the near future ?
A 4Runner is easier to feed weekly, cheaper on insurance, easier to get through traffic and easier to find a parking space, but the Expedition can haul more load and haul people more comfortably since it is wider.
