So as my 2001 Taco 4x4 DC 3.4 got the dreaded Pink milkshake I’ve been searching for options from manual swap to rebuilding a cheap used auto using IPT rebuild kit.
    I have come across an A340F from a 2002 4runner for under $500.
Are there any electrical connections or sensors that wouldn’t match up to my 01 taco that the 02 4runner would have?
    Any help is appreciated.

as you sure the trans is gone? yes, I understand that ATF / water isnt the best. You are going to have to put a radiator in it anyway and a case of trans fluid is cheaper than a transmission. IMHO, it is worth a try, you just never know...

01-02 4Runners were drive by wire and have different a340f’s that don’t have a kickdown cable. They have an internal servo to control line pressure and need a different ecu to work correctly on a truck with a throttle cable

I got fucked by the wiring harness once. The motor is simply the throttle body. But the trans is different.

It’s not completely gone, it must have happened with the previous owner as the fluid was red when I bought it, looked fresh, but I failed to notice a different radiator and old coolant still in overflow tank. I was stoked to buy my first truck and over looked those couple things. About 2 months later I was checking the fluids and seen that it turned brown, my initial thought was overheating, and I was always told growing up never change trans fluid if it goes bad, which I now learned that is kinda BS. About a month before it started slipping in overdrive I did my research and realized it was probably pink milkshake, brown fluid but no actual burnt smell or broken down fluid. But after 11k miles about a month ago it started slipping only when shifting into overdrive. Still drives with overdrive off, but feels like it has slight drag. I added some Lucas trans slip stuff, only drove it once before I noticed a crack in my radiator so now I am waiting on my replacement to come in. So haven’t had a chance to really test the Lucas stuff. I’m driving it until it dies but would like to find a cheap core and rebuild it myself.

Ahh there aren’t any mods to be done I’m guessing. I had a 98 4runner before my taco I compared the trans before I sold it and seen a couple electrical things looked different but I figured it was because it was 98 compared to 01. My sister has a 99 4runner so I might take a look to get a better understanding. I was really hoping I could get a cheap trans and rebuild it and eventually rebuild mine and sell it or keep it as a backup

Is it that they are just different from the factory or are there components that I could change when I tear it apart to make it compatible?

Also would it be possible with a HGM trans controller? They allow any trans to be hooked up to any engine pretty much, and would give tons of control over the trans.
Found out about them on 4WD action, Shaunos build up of the Dirty 30 talking to Rocket about his auto swap, anyone else on here watch those guys?

    Update:
My 01 taco current trans is 35010-3G030
    02 4runner trans is 35010-3G100
He says that it came out of a 3.4.
Not exactly sure what these model numbers mean in terms of compatibility.

I am not the guy to answer this either . I always repaired the trransmission that came out of the truck . Very seldom did I swap for a different year but if I did , you can bet I made a call to the wrecking yard to see what kind of trouble I might get myself into .
The wrecking yards have that computer program that tells you what fits and what doesnt . I always used a transmission from the same year

Check out my swap thread . All kinds of info in there .
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/transmission-swap-write-up-s.384303/

You do have the option of using an aftermarket transmission cooler bypassing the internal radiator cooler

All kinds of information in here . I do have all schematics as well

Are you meaning for my trans that had the milkshake or for the donor trans is trying to get? I’m guessing you mean my trans, is that what mainly gets damaged with the milkshake other than seals? I would think solenoids as well get damaged?

Anti -freeze removes the bonding glue that holds your clutches together .
Solenoids are designed to function in fluid and wil not be damaged by the milkshake effect , however if clutch material comes off your clutches , it will plug up the solenoids .
I beleive he is talking about using your valve body on the second hand transmission . Not something I would do but as mentioned it has been done

Ahh okay I didn’t know the clutches are what fail with the milk shake. Yeah I don’t want to swap anything over, I’d like to do it the right way from the start. I guess I’ll keep searching for a donor trans or a truck to swap to manual.
What is the actual glue of the clutches? I’ve watched IPT rebuild video and he just tosses the clutches in without assembly lube or anything, although he does say to soak them in trans fluid before installing. I’m guessing it’s something that is “built in” to the clutch disc material? if that makes sense haha

Anyway thanks again man, definitely helped

As you guessed it , The glue that holds the clutch material is built on to the steel backing plates and is some real strong stuff .
The glue is very similar to the bonding agent that holds the brake material to your brake pads .
unfortunately the glue doesnt do well with anti-freeze in either application .
Yes , I usually soak my fiber clutches, in trans fluid for at least 1/2 hour before installation . It makes for good practice during start up of a fresh rebuild so the clutching has pre lube

No, using a a340f from a 4runner/tacoma that used drive-by-wire. The transmissions in the later models are different. Please search.

Hey Gearcruncher, I ordered the Tru-Cool external cooler you recommended in one of your post. But I’m mainly wondering if I can get away with bypassing the radiator as I don’t want another pink milkshake when I replace my trans. I live in Florida, gets pretty hot here, and I work out of my truck and sometimes pull a small single axle trailer, not very often though. But I do plan to take trips to North Carolina and Colorado during the summer time driving through mountains a lot, loaded with camping gear and bikes. As of now driving about 15-20 minutes at a time, about 3 times a day, my trans temp has only gotten to 200 at the end of the day with just stock radiator cooler. But that’s only about 5-10 miles a trip. Would the tru cool provide enough cooling to keep my temps under 200 even on summer days through mountains bypassed?
I ordered the 7.25x11 size cooler. Have a 3.4 Tacoma with 33’s. Don’t do any wheeling as Florida is just a mud pit, so not much low range driving, but would do some trails out west possibly.
I understand if this isn’t something you can really give an exact answer on, but thought I’d ask. Thanks

200 is a little toasty for such a short trip .
Are you planning on purchasing a scan guage or analog guage to keep an eye on your transmission temps ?
Thats the easiest way to keep the temps under 200 in an attempt to prevent your fluid from cooking
If you plan to bypass the rad completely , consider a fan to go with your cooler purchase .
The old rule of thumb .......Once you begin towing , pull the dipstick out and try placing it on your forearm . If its too hot , you need to cool more .

Thanks for the info, good to know about the dipstick trick.
It didn’t get to 200 each trip but the last trip home from work after driving about 5 miles about an hour before, in 90 degree weather.
From cold, doing an 7 mile trip it hasn’t gone above 140 And it’s stayed constant with temps the past couple days. As of now I just have a OBD scanner and app that shows trans temps. Haven’t had a chance to test it on a longer drive yet. Also, that was all driving with O/D off in mild city driving. OD has been off because it’s been slipping when it shifts into overdrive. I may consider a fan, what fan would you recommend for the cooler? Thanks again
