4th fuel pump fail

I wouldn't call the enclosure you're referring to a filter. Isn't it to just hold fuel at the pump so it doesn't "go dry" while turning? Does it actually have a filter medium?

 

I dont remember the exact code but it is for lean misfire
the last couple times it happened I brought it to Toyota and they could see that the pump was not ramping up to full speed (it is a 3 speed pump that is controlled with the Ecm adjusting pulse width)
as soon as the pump is replaced it runs perfect
I have replaced it everytime with a Toyota Pump
yes there is a driveability issue when you need more then about half throttle it starts to stutter and then dies (like the key was turned off) as soon as you lift on the throttle a bit the engine runs perfect
the first pump lasted about 180,000k but the last two were about 30,000k
I always fill up at Cheveron and use the 94 because it "says" it has no ethanol and I thought it would be good gas (I know this can open a real can of worms on a forum)
I think this answers all the questions so far
Tomorrow I am towing it on a trailer with my Land Cruiser to Toyota and get them to at least diagnose

what harness did they replace?? the one from the Ecm to the fuel pump Ecm or the one from the fuel pump Ecm to the fuel pump???

 

Yes it has filter media inside that white container which I quoted in the picture. Let me take all of you guys back to the days when there was a massive debate of if upgrading a fuel pump and filter were necessary performance mods after installing a supercharger and adding a few more power adders to it. The only way to solve a debate is with facts. Which everyone can agree with. Regardless of the many fuel pump upgrades I have done on various peoples trucks, as well as inspecting their fuel filters , @XPOTRPR wanted to help out with the debate. For knowledge's sake. He sent me his pump and filter since he had recently upgraded his. With that filter and pump assembly, I sent it to a globally renowned independent research facility. SWRI. There it was tested with pump and with filter to the feeling end of its capability. That unbiased information was then shared on this forum in the performance section. However, within minutes of being posted the thread was then closed and deleted. The moderators believed it was fueling a continual fire because the debate had become so heated with a few members. Regardless , the fuel filter was inspected, and I believe it was around 30 to 40 thousand miles,( @XPOTRPR can confirm the mileage, )and left attached to the pump during the test. The data was shown and now it is no longer available. At the end of the day the fact remains that this whole post of mine is it repeat post and probably only @tcBob would be able to bring that thread back. If it wasn't physically deleted. The filter will clog over time.

If anyone still has doubts, I will get a blow-up of the components.

 

There was a guy recently with a I think 2012 plus model that his fuel pump went out on him. He did a test called a ramp test on the fuel pump and found his OEM pump to be lacking or faulty. I do not remember the thread which that was in comma but he cannot be the only one in the hundreds of thousands of owners to have such a feeling problem. However that is not to say that that is your problem, but to test the pump was such a method would rule it out.

 

Would like to see the diagram and actual pic of filter media.

If you Sandman want to see the media itself, the politely ask someone who is upgrading their pump, not to throw it away without first cutting it open. I have no pictures of that.

 

Here's the thing. This thread will disappear, then people will forget the fact that the1GR-FE 2nd Gen Tacoma has an intank fuel filter. Then the questions will all come up again.

My apologies for semi derailing your thread.

Seems they have already been performing the ramp test, and proving the pumps haven't been performing as intended. Are they replacing the whole fuel pump assembly, or just the pump itself?

Also, keep us posted on how it goes today.

 

I assume whole assembly. I Doubt Toyota would replace the pump itself.

 

what about anything electrical? Fuses or anything?

 

I could see that as a strong possibility. From a time standpoint. Which would then replace the filter as well. Which would then mean a wiring issue, fuel line issue, or repeatedly bad pumps issue.

We'll know soon enough.

 

There without a doubt is a fuel filter inside that white canister. How do i know? ive cut 9 of them open at work, to show costumer who didn't believe me either. Chevy, ford, Toyota etc, ANY truck with a return-less non external fuel filter has 3 things in the tank.
A sock, which feeds into a fuel filter inside the fuel module, which goes to the pump. Dumbest design they could have done.

Also, my pump failed at 32k. Was under warranty but i decided to go with urd upgrade. A few things I noticed right away. The filter in my tank was indeed plugged.
The oem pumps are very small, I was actually surprised when i opened it up.
The bigger pump is the Urd pump, its the size of a standard chevy fuel pump.

The urd kit fixes those by putting in a bigger pump while reusing the original module(in Canada the module is about $350-500 from Toyota or A.M The urd kit was about $100.) and adds an external fuel filter in front of the tank, plugs into the factory lines.

Also to note, never noticed my truck was pinging until i changed the pump, i just thought it was the Toyota tick. That is gone.

At our shop, 90% of bad pumps lately have been the non external filter design, and every single one has been a plugged internal filter causing the pump to burn out. Some low power, some just setting lean codes.


I will add that wiring is a common issue as well, you could try closing the gaps on your pump connector and cleaning them up.
