Nice stuff. I might do the same with the off road trims (ZR2, TRD Pro, etc)

Absolutely. And I’ll be adding Frontier and some more full size.

I plan to add to it. This was just a quick 30 min dive into it.

This is a valid point. I think the reason you don't see factory long travel is simply from a daily driver perspective. No manufacturer wants to support a warranty and service of a specialty suspension.

My truck is mid-travel minus control arms and the naturally aspirated 4 banger can get me going way faster than the suspension can handle.

I used to really be into the desert stuff and Baja when I lived in AZ. Once you have driven race trucks. The factory Pro mid travel Tacomas are kind of a joke. Sure they look cool, but you can’t really truly hammer on them or they will break.

See that all the time with the bikes, guys want to build up the fastest most powerful engine, and we tell them yeah it isn’t as sexy, but you should throw your money at the suspension, all that power is useless if you can’t get it to the ground. Plus the average Joe rider will never out ride a stock bike. See guys all the time with totally blinged out bikes, and the guy in cover-alls on a clapped out 10-15 year old bike will beat them every time.

You can get a long travel vehicle from the factory and it is called a Side X Side. Those will lay a Pro, Raptor, ZR2, what have you to waste simply because those truck’s suspension can’t keep up.

Want to go fast off-road with a factory vehicle, buy one of those. Hell, make it rainbow colored and laugh at those trucks trying to keep up through the whoops.

Updated chart - numbers are based on 1 level up from base model. I might make one with all the OR spec'd trims.
Vehicles included: Colorado (LT), Canyon (Elevation), Frontier (SV), Tacoma (3rd Gen SR5), Ranger (XLT) details TBD.

Man seeing 400+ torque numbers now is kind of blowing my mind. Also makes me wonder about longevity. Hope these aluminum blocks don't warp long-term.

Great info! Thanks for sharing. Do you have plans to add the 2023 ZR2 specs to the chart?

Yeah, I plan to maybe sometime later today, before the reveal, to add all the off-road spec'd vehicles.

Yeah crazy what is coming out now.

First and foremost I want reliability and practicality. Having been driving underpowered Toyotas for 30 years, power isn’t real high on the list. Would love to have better efficiency over outright power.

That said with my 3G, most powerful of all the Toyotas I have owned, it has given me a taste. Has plenty for I want and need, just needs to have better lowend torque, as I am starting to sound like a broken record saying that again and again. That new turbo 4 should fulfill all the wants and desires. Though by the time I am ready to buy in 4 years, probably step up to a full-size.

I'd be happy with everything in the 3rd gen staying the same, but an improved transmission to assist with the gear hunting. I mean, I would LOVE better fuel efficiency, but the transmission was my biggest issue with the truck.

All depends on what travel trailer we get. 1/2 Ton could probably do “ok”. Like a bit of over-kill for towing. Since Toyota doesn’t make a 1 Ton, either a Chevy or Ford gasser. The GM rides better, which one is built better, who knows? Won’t go near a Ram.

Looking at inTech toy haulers: https://intech.com/rv/models/ovr/adventure/ All loaded up wet, be pushing the limits of a half ton.

Not sure if it is trans itself. My only hunts with the cruise control on, off it is mostly fine. I like the cruise control since it helps me not to get speeding tickets. Call it my “self control device” if you know what I mean. ;) Kinda sucks getting so annoyed with the erratic shifting to turn it off. What is the point of having that feature if you can’t use it? My old truck was a manual, the CC would simply give more throttle. If it was under too much load going up a grade, it would kick off if the speed got slower than 8-10 mph. With the auto instead of giving more throttle or kicking off it just shifts and throttles wildly.

The new turbo will push peak torque lower in the rpm range, it should help a bunch.

Going from a 6 speed to an 8 or even a 10 would solve a lot of the gear hunting issues... maybe even ink out a few more MPGs in the process

My old Isuzu Trooper was a 4 Speed, it didn’t hunt. It had the GM 4L60 in it, a terrible transmission since they tend to give up the ghost early in life. When it was working, shifted fine with the cruise on.

Those 6-10 speeds would shift even more since they are constantly looking for the sweet spot in the rpm range for mpgs. Really don’t need all those gears, However manufacturers are constantly looking for mpg gains because of government regulations.
