Has anyone had a failure in the last month? I think Toyota addressed it.

Backordered and taking weeks to months to receive, I might as well buy a whole new suspension set up with new shocks. But not sure where to even begin with what shocks to go with as I want something free of regular maintenance. I don’t have tacoma specialists in my area.

I will wait…and keep my wallet closed for now…

    Sure.

There are something like 130,000 Tacomas on the road, and there have been 3 or 4 known failures. Since some folks don't post their problems, we can probably triple that.

But order a set and install them. Assuming you own a 4th gen.

They fixed it? I got my 4th gen 1 month ago and it was produced in July I believe. Those unfortunates could have had faulty manufactures but I still don’t want to risk it. I looked at the top of my front strut and it doesn’t look any different from other 4th gen’s so IDK

Regarding the 40 and 200, are those new unsold vehicles?

You mean like the Land Cruiser 250?

Toyota did this because the LC's basic black shocks aren't as fancy as the Tacoma's.

Canadian Toyota dealers like to throw shade on other dealers/shops. They're implying the top hat is so fragile that it can be broken during freight to the dealer, and they blame the selling dealer for not catching the failure during PDI.

There may be an element of truth as the trucks are jumped from boxcar to boxcar like a rallycross course during the freight process.

Can't agree with that. They are likely trying things out on their cheaper, lower quality model. Like they always do. Kind of like when they stuffed the failed project that was a 3.5L in a Tacoma. While they kept putting the 4.0 into the 4runner all the way up to this year.

The Tacoma is what, $15k+ cheaper than a Land Cruiser? The Land Cruiser/LX/GX are the flagship models and they get the best components. Making an internal shock bumpstop, was only for cost savings.

^You're getting marketing mixed with reality. The LC gets basic black Tokico twin tube shocks which are horrible for cooling but do just fine for the target market - middle class housewives going to pilates (i.e. the same market served by Land Rover). Meanwhile Tacoma gets 5100-sized Bilsteins with piggyback reservoir and internal bump zone valving. The cost-cutting was in the top hat casting quality (which looks like Harbor Freight potmetal). I wouldn't be surprised if Toyota simply switches to a stamped steel top hat and we never hear about it again.

Didn't know they cheaped out on the shocks. That sucks. Good thing 90%+ of off road enthusiasts change their shocks or springs out for something better. Including tons of pro owners. Toyota factory suspension has sucked since day 1. 3rd gen off road factory shocks look like they belong on a Toyota Yaris.

Tight and an extra 1/4 turn. I did not see any specs. That seemed to be how tight they were coming off
