My only major issue with my truck (which I knew going into ownership) is the mediocre MPG amplified majorly by fuel prices earlier this summer.

Assuming the 2.4 TTI4 from the Lexus NX350/Highlander goes into the new Tacoma, what is a reasonable expectation for MPG gains? There are a few 2022 NX350s now showing up in Fuelly; MPG is not that impressive at 22. I think the Highlander is rated 24 combined with the same engine. Expect 20/25 and 23 combined for the new 4wd Tacoma? Hopefully the I4 hybrid can pick up another 4-5 MPG, minimum. Either way, probably keeping the '19 for a good while until the 4th gen dust settles.

    Just do this...
Find out how much you have spent on gas this year (miles driven/gallons)* price per gallon=how much you spent.
Now do the same thing at 25 or 26 mpg and compare.
The difference is less than you think.
Then stop and think how many decades it will take to make that savings on mpg work out to difference in price.

    Oh look, another mod....
Never forget these three rules of life:

    1) Never get your hopes up.
    2) Set realistic expectations.
    3) Don't over think it.

I fully expect the 4th gen to soundly beat the 3rd gen by 1 mpg.

I don't really know I had a 21 jetta r line and those engines are the same 4 cylinder turbo. Was highly advised to use premium from dealership. My uncle whose been in car business and has been doing car/truck/ moto stuff forever confirmed. Never thought much of it just put it

comparing other engines isn't going to get you anywhere, the Tacoma is heavy and lacks good aerodynamics. Now, they could make it lighter, get rid of other off-roadish type attributes, and so on,,, but I doubt the faithful followers will go for that.
Afterall, we are merely speculating, unless someone has seen any real detail of the 4th?

I don't really care about what the fourth gen brings was just sharing useful information from my past experience. Happy with my truck and got it so specifically wouldn't have to deal with that turbo 4 cylinder crap again.

my guess is little difference in fuel mileage for city driving, and a 10-20% increase on highway.

I am glad I bought now instead of "the next great thing" which is an experiment with the consumer.

When the goal of a company is to sell a product to the public that was created to please the government it starts like it ends,.... not well for the public at all.

Since this is all speculation and chat....I would love a diesel option. But, I would also like to see a hybrid version with the new GR 3 cylinder engine. Here is a clip I took from a write up:

GR Corolla, which will generate 300 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque with the same engine.

TheG16E-GTSengine, as Toyota calls it internally, is exclusively mated to a six-speed manual transmission, which then feeds the GR-Four all-wheel-drive system. Paying homage to the legendary—and somewhat infamous—Celica GT-Four, the GR-Four AWD system helps get all that rowdy power to the pavement and it's also adjustable.

Toyota will let you pick the front/rear torque split with the simple turn of a dial: 60/40, 50/50, or 30/70.

    A few.
Since the new 2022 Tundra mpgs have been increased to the level of the current Tacoma, I would say those numbers for the 2.4L in the Lexus sound about right. The current Tacoma shows an average of 18-18.5 mpgs on Fuelly.com so that would be a 3-4 mpg increase.

But but, you'll get more torques down low!
Could we then call the new engine a "truck" engine?
Wait, the most important thing is that stroke is bigger than bore.. did I regurgitate that correctly?

My 2 cents and last words on "a great idea"

These small engines may get a bit better gas mileage while they squeeze every pound of power out of it.
In doing so will not make for a "long lasting" powerplant. You will have a 50/50 vehicle.
It CAN get good gas mileage and it CAN match the old power level, for how long..

Experiments are for laboratories not the working man's mode of transportation.
I am all for making things better if they do just that.
However, let's make sure the plan works before we throw out the working plan.

But seems to be the intelligence of today's minds that this works,... Trust Me!
Just like today's cell phone. They could make it not operate while you're driving.... but no.

Cell phone use in vehicles has killed and destroyed more lives than they would care for being released to the public.
As the CEO said "People are smart they will use the phones wisely, we do not want to restrict their rights or privacies".

    In other words; (CEO interpretation)
People expect service and we as a company do not want to be restricted or have our phones controlled by another entity.
