I think anyone that buys into turbo for fuel economy alone is gonna be disappointed. Turbo is just a form of on demand displacement. More air, more fuel, no free lunch. A buddy of mine just got his new tundra back from the turbo ordeal and he’s getting 1 1/2 - 2 mpg better than the 2016 tundra he traded in. Dudes going back to gm now that he’s convinced Toyota reliability is no better these days and maintenance cost likely to be much greater. For mpg, gm is hard to beat. My sierra 1500 crew cab 2wd will do 26 mpg on the highway at 70 mph.

Since everyone is speculating, how about we start a “likely major component that must be removed to access the 4th gen failed turbo” thread

would it be too optimistic to assume that they would put it in a clear easily serviced area like the old Dodge Cummins Straight 6's?

Not a GM fan, but I think if you're going to go with a single engine choice, the three output levels that will be avail in the new Colorado's 2.7 turbo could be a good way to go.
It was reported that the higher output options are avail in lower trims too. Unfortunately I don't see Toyota doing that part.

i think the "r" might be the deciding factor there. VW builds a lot of turbo engines tuned for 87.

While the MPGs are bound to be better... the cost of entry will likely go up 20% just like with the Tundra/Sequoia. So that's a lot of fuel... and the complexity of the new powertrain will surely end up costing more to run over the long term (200k miles)

Well, measuring your fuel economy while coasting downhill isn't really a great contribution.

I suppose they plan on beating that by making more power at lower RPM's. We'll see if it actually works in a few years. It's working on the Tundra, so far.

It seems like the fuel economy achieved on all of these newer, more efficient drivetrains depends entirely on driving style.

I have to assume you were keeping it under 70 mph, and not a lot of stop and go traffic.

Those numbers are achievable at 70ish mph with some stop and go (albeit not bumper to bumper traffic for hours).

Come back after the tank is on empty, not on full. Summer usually delivers around 21 - 22 overall average on mine, guessing you see similar?

Ha. I got around 24.5mpg (hand calculated) sitting in maybe 50 mins of traffic. 20 minutes or so of bumper to bumper. + driving at 70mph for maybe 2 hours on the tank.

    I was super impressed.

I had 50 miles to e and had just filled up. I average anywhere from 22 to 25 on the regular. Not sure why this is so Unachievable. I'm happy with it and it keeps me going. Also cost me only 59.59 to fill up

I've basically parked the truck to drive my daughter's Rav4 hybrid until she comes back from overseas later this summer. 38 MPG easy-peasy in mixed driving.

Love my truck, but once you go hybrid, its hard to go back.

That's pretty damn good for mixed driving. I've never seen 22 in my 4runner.
