Noticing third gear on my 24 MT SR is a bit “catchy”, almost like there is a snag or groove between the channels of 1st and 3rd the shifter gets hung in. I’ve sort of gotten used to being more precise shifting to third but sometimes I hit the snag and it doesn’t shift into third right away. I let my buddy take it for a spin and we were stuck in heavy traffic because he couldn’t figure out how to move it to third because of this snag spot, and thought it was weird.

It’s kind of similar to when I first bought it, I was pulling the shift too far left to go into second and missing the 2nd gear channel basically putting the shifter somewhere between first and reverse and cannot shift to second from that point. That one isn’t an issue for me now since I’ve gotten used to it.

In another unrelated forum I was reading this can be a symptom of a bad synchro.

wondering for the other 4th gen MT owners have. you’ve noticed the same? Assuming it doesn’t get worse, I’ll ask Toyota about it on my first service.

It’s best to get it documented by the dealer..so if later on down the road something does happen you have a complaint

Are u fully engaging the clutch ? Sometimes when the clutch is new it needs to be fully engaged to properly shift over time it should loosen up a bit . If it continues on have dealer diagnose it .

I would mention it on your first oil change…that way it will be documented

Just drove my new 6MT this morning and practiced a lot. I do not notice a snag so much but I was taught to let the shifter normalize itself and then push it past the gate for 3rd and 4th.

Sometimes going down to 2nd I find myself getting lost and needing to reattempt but I'm also new to stick.

The characteristics I am noticing right now that I want to get a second opinion on is a louder driveline thunk going from 1st to 2nd. My shifting is still novice so I had my dad give it a try and he wasn't bothered at all so not sure if this is just me coming from auto.

I also have a clunk from first to second, not sure if it’s normal or not, been 8+ years since my last stick, but I think my last may have had it too.

3rd gear syncros on mine (2019) were a bit picky when new. More miles, like 15,000, and a fluid change mostly cured it. It doesn't sound like this is what you're talking about though.

When shifting from 2nd to 3rd try letting the shift lever do most of the work. As in you're just popping it out of 2nd into neutral and up to 3rd, but in a continuous fluid motion.

I've noticed 1st to 2nd is clunkier. Not obnoxiously so but I definitely feel it more than all the remaining upshifts.

It needs to break in a little bit. My 3rd gen was the same way (very similar transmissions) and it took a while for 3rd to click in right.

Good advice thanks I'll give it some time and mention it at the 10,000 mile change. I am able to work it because i'm driving it everyday so have learned the temperament. But I also need my wife to be able to drive the truck on occasion, and since she doesn't drive stick regularly this will be a big put-off. Will keep an eye on it, also only at ~1000 miles. Thanks!

That is a sure sign of a bad synchro.

My 23 does it too going to 3rd. Takes a bit to get used to it. Now I don't notice it anymore

I don't know about the throwout bearing. Why would it only affect 3rd and not every gear?

I used to have to double clutch when temps were really cold. Got used to it until it became natural.

Many 2nd gens with the 6spd have this problem getting into third gear.

Using redline gear oil is the fix. Use this oil, before it's too late.

Are 3rd/4th gens using the same ol' 6spd?

I also did this to my 07 civic si. Stock fluid sucks in the winter and make the gears feel hard to engage. Redline and amsoil fix the issue. Or maybe my car just came with low fluid from the factory.

I have also found that switching out the stock trans fluid to Amsoil or Redline made all the difference. Shifts like butter now! Also, my second gen has the same thing with 3rd gear. For whatever reason the gate opens late in the 3rd gear syncro. If you pause for a second going into 3rd, giving that gate time to open it will fall into 3rd easily and smoothly. 3rd gear doesn't like to be rushed. If I rush 3rd it will grind.
