Yup…. Super easy to gnarl the threads on them. They actually looked a bit deformed after removing them the first time.

 

You can’t fire me if I’m just being a bum living in my mom’s basement.

 

I like to use Purolator One oil filters, (PL11411) so obviously won't be going to the dealer for them. Does anyone know the part number for the oil plug crush washer so I could order online?

Washer is peace of mind i guess.
I’ve used the same washer for 17 years on my gen 2 4.0. Honestly i never had a hint of a leak. Wipe if off good and good to go.

 

Yeah I didn’t even know about them until hearing about them on this site. I’ve been doing oil changes on several cars never had a crush washer before. But this is also the newest car using lightest oil I’ve ever owned, so I plan and using them going forward.

TLDR Folks: Therefore, our conclusion is pretty simple: if you can find a Wix or K&N filter for the same cost as an OEM Toyota filter, you should think about buying it. Otherwise, based on the pricing we found, the Toyota OEM filter seems like the smart choice.

 

FYI my dealer sells 10-packs of the crush washers for $1.47 and the oil filters are like $5.50. Most likely yours will have them in stock and it's much cheaper than eBay/Amazon

I did a bit of digging on these. I thought the same thing and so I prematurely went and purchased 10 new ones from the dealer believing that they were screwed up somehow. No, the way they look is exactly how they're supposed to look. They are in intended to look the way they do because they are self tapping.

 

Sure. But they still deform very easily, self tapping or not.

 

What size are they? I think I'll replace mine with non-self tappers.

 

I just changed my oil at 750 miles, for break In, you can not pre-filled out tacos, installed sideways, as soon as you fill it and put it in place all the oils comes out, we should all stop dreaming of pre-filling our oil filters, just wet the seal. My 2 cents

 

Just stopped by to pour one out for the 2nd gen Tacoma. Open hood, oil filter was right there on top. 10 seconds to swap it.

Now there's 8 bolts and two skid plates. Engineers ought to be forced to *work* on the cars they design.

 

Go do an Audi 3.0T v6. The filter is on top (inside the vee along with the center mount turbo) but you have to remove the whole intake assembly and suspension tower cross brace to get to it.

 

I've been removing skid plates to change the oil on my Tacomas since 2016. I assume the engineers moved the filter next to the oil pan because of an issue with filters that drain when the engine is turned off.
