Has the method changed on the 4th gen Tacoma for going from 2H to 4H and back to 2H from what it's been since at least 2005? As in, shifting on the fly, either way? Neutral didn't used to be involved with 2H to 4H and back...

Nothing has changed in how to shift. To summarize the thread in case you haven't read it:
-When it didn't work as expected, OP tried every combination of in and out of gear switching into and out of 2H, 4H and 4L. It's not operator error or failure to read the manual
-Dealer has the truck and can't figure it out.
-Truck is broke broke broke broke broke

I read the entire thread before posting, thank you, and realize the truck is in the shop for diagnosis and repair. The OP began the thread by describing the shift sequence I asked about, so I wanted to know if something had changed for 2024+ 4x4 Tacomas.

If you knew what you were doing you'd have never stopped to put the truck into and out of 4X4. You just flip the switch while driving. I've never had an issue going from 2wd to 4wd and back in high range. Getting out of low range can sometimes be a challenge. That's when you stop and shift to neutral. And sometimes it helps to drive a few feet in reverse to get it to disengage.

Are you SURE it's actually in 4X4? Just because the light on the dash is on doesn't necessarily mean it's in 4X4. It could be something as simple as disconnecting the battery for a few minutes to get the light to reset.

If you've been using 4X4 regularly in the 9 months you've had it, you've probably been using it where it isn't supposed to be used which wears out components prematurely.

Well, while you do seem to be having an actual problem, you were doing it wrong. According to the manual. It says, clear as day, that you're supposed to be in gear and moving below 62mph to go from 2H to 4H. It says you're supposed to stop and go to neutral to shift from 4H to 4L.

So being indignant because people are telling you to read the manual and declaring "you know what you're doing" just makes you look bad.

I’ve switched to 4H and out of several times while stopped, and will continue to do so as needed. Just like any 4x4 I’ve ever owned. It doesn’t say you have to be moving just below 62 mph. There clearly is a problem with the pickup, and the dealership should be embarrassed they can’t figure it out! It’s really not that complicated! I’d be pretty pissed as well if someone said to read the owners manual.
    F-bombs…yeah probably over the top.

Here's the very next page in the manual (p406):

    upload_2025-3-31_15-52-59.png

This also jibes with my experience shifting 2H->4H while at a stop light and anticipating wanting 4WD to cross the intersection. It sometimes won't complete the shift because not everything is lined up until you roll some.

Look, it sounds like there's actually a problem with your truck. Whether the service department should be embarrassed is up in the air; you've maybe got a problem they've not yet had to solve and isn't obvious.

But what is embarrassing is your insistence that you know better despite what the manual says in clear, black and white.

Zero is less than 62 mph. If they wanted to be clear black and white it would say make you you are moving when shifting between 2H and 4H.

The way it’s worded implies as long as you aren’t going over 62 mph it’s fine.

I do agree in practice (in Toyotas and other electronic shift transfer cases), it’s usually a smoother shift with some movement.

Toyota had same issues with the 3rd Gen in the beginning. Bad Solenoids sticking or failing.

You caring this much about something this stupid is just sad. Read all the posts before you yap. I tried shifting while driving it still wouldn’t work. I had a faulty actuator motor.
