Keep the tundra and supercharge it

it will be more fun unless you need to fit it too tight of spots

Like you said, that's before tax, title, and whatever fees, easily surpasses 50K out the door.

Depends, if it's Lunar rock sell it to me for trade in value plus tax savings. Then get the LC or the tacoma pro. So then I can supercharge it and cancel my pro order for MSRP. :burnrubber:

Texted the sales guy and he's letting me borrow the truck for 3-4 hours on Saturday so I can really get a feel for it. Maybe I'll pull the trigger after, but I'm a pretty slow financial decision maker so probably not haha

They are initially listing for 10-15% over what they are worth. Anyone buying one of these in the first six months is even more underwater than what would normally be expected from a new car purchase. Unless you are in desperate need of a vehicle I'd pass on the Tacoma for a year or get the Colorado/Canyon.

The dealers will be putting on their bling and marking them up like crazy. Unless you know a dealer that will give you a 24 off the transporter untouched. My awesome dealer did this for my 2016 FRS. But that wasn't a Tacoma.

I'm gonna be completely honest with you, as an owner of the 3rd gen Taco since Dec. of '16, if I was in the market for a ride right now I would NOT buy a 3rd gen.

I say this as a guy who generally likes his truck and sees no need to "upgrade" at this point. I am saying this as a guy who can see the market and options available, even used, that are a much more compelling purchase than a 3rd gen.

If I had a 35k budget, I'd head right for my local Nissan dealer, followed by a trip to my nearest GM dealer. 35k is real close to MSRP on a current gen truck that is better in almost every measurable way compared to a 3rd gen.

My truck has been rock solid the last 50k miles. The first 30k were not so great though. Toyota reliability matters here a bit and the 3rd gen for all the quibbles, has been mostly as expected overall.

Waiting a year and see how the lunacy pans out is probably the best plan.

Lots of choices out there right now and prices seem to drop weekly. Seeing previous model Colorado diesels below $30K, not sure I would take a chance on those, read loads of problems they have. That torque and fuel economy though. Tempting.

Absolutely love my 3rd Gen, that said given the choice right now to buy again. Dunno, tough decision, can’t stop looking at 1/2 Tons, but love my 3G…Good thing I don’t need a new truck any time soon. My wife however keeps on hinting at new vehicle. Maybe I can have both! :)

Are you basing your opinion of all 3rd gen Tacoma’s on a 2016?

People will pay for what they want. Is a 911 Carrera worth twice as much as a Supra? Supra has 382/368 hp/tq vs 379/331 for the 911. Is a Turbo S worth twice as much as the Carrera?

I appreciate the insight, it's always nice to get a different perspective. From what I know the 2016's had a few more issues but by 2022 (the truck I'm looking at) all seem to be non-issues and is generally considered as being up to the classic Toyota reputation for reliability. I also don't mind the Frontiers so maybe I'll swing by and take one for a spin. Thanks for the suggestion.

    I have a '17 and yes.

The only thing later years had that I wanted was LED headlights, so I went and got them. Other than a flash or two, none since 10/18, I have had 0 issues with the tranny or motor. I am speaking strictly from an overall value position, not dogging Toyota position.

Other makes are simply better than the 10 year old Toyota design.

    I didn’t like my 2017. Love my 2021.

I'm not speaking from an issues standpoint.

I had paint, ECU, TCU, and rear end seepage to deal with that lots of users had, correct. All of that was resolved in the first 30k miles. I am saying that a '22 Tacoma is not better than a '22 Frontier or '23 Colorado which can be had in your budget.

All the bones are exactly the same on any 3rd gen Tacoma. I can easily use my truck as a yardstick here. The long term sleeper agent issues are all there, no matter what year you Taco you buy, leaking timing cover, cross over pipe, etc...

I have no gripes with my truck, other than my gas door is wonky. I have never had any real complaints with the tranny, other than reverse delay which was flashed in '18.

I have never experienced the complaints that are common here. I will say I never use CC though.

that post sailed over your head

there’s definitely a discussion to be had about the value of quality (heck, there are books on the subject, like zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance).

    Understood, thanks for clarifying.

I think the Frontiers are still the same old thing underneath as well. They did go through that exterior/interior refresh recently though. I do really like the new Colorado's also and I know they're working through their software issues day by day. A friend recently asked me, "Which truck would you rather be driving at 100k miles", when I was comparing Tacoma vs Colorado, and Tacoma was an easy answer for me.
