One of my friends took his truck in for a dealership engine swap years ago. Long story short: they installed it backwards and he ended up with 5 reverse gears and one forward gear.

The biggest thing we will all have to pay attention to with these motors is making sure we stay on top of the oil changes because the engine oil and the turbo share the same oil and it will eat the turbo alive if you don’t stay on top of changes……

Heck I’m happy when I get underneath & confirm that these guys can tighten an oil filter. And sometimes they didn’t….

But consciously purchasing something that I know will need a full dealer install of a TTV6 or has already had a swap? I guess my opinion of why we buy a Toyota in the first place may differ from others…

Those Tundys need to go back to the factory for the swap. That, or they need to go to a regional center where factory personnel perform the swap.

There is 100K of them. Ofc there will be a streamlined process. The people doing it will be so experienced at it, they will be almost as good as factory workers

Not like they are going to have reps there looking over their shoulders at the replacement centers. Naw, not at all.

100K and the future of the Tundra brand on the line.

Edit: I wouldn't be surprised to see the TFL guys livestreaming, on scene ffs.

Edit 2: "We are here with the first in the nation replacement Tundra engine. Andre, will it start?"

If the transmissions keep dropping on the 4th gens, the techs may get some transmission replacement practice when they wrap up their engine replacement work.

Probably nothing out of the ordinary but it seem like I have seen more than a few failed or problematic transmissions reported on different sites, there was one here earlier today.

They caught my eye because normally transmissions are not something you usually have to worry about with Toyota, but this one is all new so I guess we should expect a few.

Toyota felt left out since the domestic manufactures have transmission failures all the time, so they had to go and do this :notsure:

Obviously I'm being facetious, but it does worry me a little bit. However, I don't take my truck on trips or anything like that, so I'm always a 20 miles tow to my selling and servicing dealer. It sucks for those who use the trucks for trips and excursions.

Is Toyota using similar designs to what the domestics are using? If they are copying a design that has issues those issues are still going to be there.

I saw one report on the Tundra forum of a clunking transmission when down shifting. Sounds like it was a programming issue.

I think the initial rollout of the FWD 8 speeds wasn't too good either. Completely different transmissions I know, but something that popped up in my twisted little mind.

The 8 speed in a 2023 Camry behaved much better than the 8 speed I drove in a 2020 Camry, and both were better than the one in my moms highlander (granted that’s the 3.5L vs the 2.5L, so likely different programming).

Ironically we have a '23 Camry. I have no complaints about the 8 speed, besides the lugging it wants to do to keep the RPM's low. Never drove an earlier model. Had a 2015, but it was a 6 speed.

I traveled a bunch for work last year so I had rentals like crazy and had a chance to drive quite a few MYs of Camrys. How much better the 8 speed was in the 2023 vs the earlier MYs solidified the decision to get a 2023 RAV4 for my wife.

I don't know about copying, Aisin makes their transmissions and traditionally they have been very solid transmissions. Hopefully just a little teething issue. I know ZF also makes a solid 8 speed.

As for there are only a few of them etc like in the shared video, I get it...but the Tundra engine issue started like that with similar video analysis telling people not to worry about it....until they didn't. The good thing I guess is that it seems like they are failing really early so far. That is better than the ticking time bomb situation the the Tundra engine has.

I went to my dealer yesterday to get some parts for my tundra. They have a 2024 Tundra with 48 miles on it getting a new engine and transmission. I am trying to get the build date of it out of my service advisor as the updated engine parts happened early 2024. This one could be much newer than that.

My ‘24 was built the last day of November 2023 so I am watching it all closely. He said the transmission was having “issues” and Toyota cleared it for replacement.
