You can glean a lot of info from the Cal Air Resources Board executive order list. To be sold in Ca a vehicle must be tested and those results be submitted to CARB for approval. The list will show what engines are approved for what vehicles etc.

    Start digging :)

Tacoma fit and finish is on par with what I would expect from reasonably priced midsize. I also understand when people expect a better fit and finish for the money.

I think Toyota wants to get 4Runner buyers into the Grand Highlander, Sequioa, and new GX. I don't expect midsize BOF SUV to be around much longer. Right now the only options in the segment are T4R and GX, everything else is unibody and only the Grand Cherokee is RWD basis.

The MGM paint match issue pre-dates the 3G trucks. I distinctly remember a member who had a brand new 2G DCSB with different color doors.

I completely disagree with this. Toyota sales every 4runner they can make right now, and that's with essentially a 12 year old design. IMO what's happening is CUV's are pulling away sedan sales, not SUV sales. This is why both GM and Ford have stopped producing almost all there sedans. I think we are far more likely to see an electric 4runner before we see it go away. To me the Avalon is much more endanger than the 4runner is.

Tacoma is delayed because the diesel 4Runner drops in October.

Yeah, Toyota is going to stop bringing a vehicle to the US that is sells over 100K of, and builds for a bunch of countries in the rest of the world with rebadges, AND cede and exit an entire category and cede it to Ford and Jeep.

Sounds like a solid business plan to me....

Jeez, that sent me down a rabbit hole. Anyway, I was able to find the CARB certification for the 2023 Taco with the 3.5L engine and the 4Runner with the 4.0 L.

The Taco is shown as producing 1.4 milligrams of particulate matter per mile, whereas the Runner does 4.0 mg/mile. Every Runner they sell affects their allowable fleet average, which is 3.0 until 2025, when it drops to 1.0.
So, it's possible they (Toyota) may be willing to sell the old Runner for another model year, but it comes with some risks...and we know how much Toyota likes risk.

Are you talking about the current GX and the fifth generation for 4Runner platform? Because they gave up on that years ago, neither has seen any update to the powertrain and are based off of the 4th generation 4Runner that came out 20 years ago.

I was referring to the comment that Toyota will stop making the 4 runner for the US and not bring the 6th gen 4 runner to the US. The assumption on the comment I was addressing is that Toyota will discontinue the 4Runner for the US market.

They may have to due to emissions regulations. It may be easier to stop selling the 4Runner than come up with a total redesign. How many different SUVs does Toyota really need to make anyways? 4Runner fans can move to a Sequoia or a Grand Highlander. Honestly if a 6th gen 4Runner doesn’t have the same bulletproof drivetrain that it has now then many people including myself won’t want one anyways.

The 6th gen 4 runner redesign is in process...the only caveat is will it hit the market next year or the following.

The capablities of the Highlander and Sequoia are in a different ballpark than the 4runner. The highlander is a station wagon, the sequoia is a giant lumbering people mover that won't fit the same places the 4 runner does. And they would be abandoning a complete category of vehicle that Ford and Jeep and currently Toyota compete in.

The bulletproof drivetrain issue is the same for the Tacoma...new drivetrain new problems. I get what you are saying, but it would make no sense to redesign the 4 runner and then decide...well you know what, we just won't ship this to the US but we will keep sending it everywhere else in the world that we build 4 runners and prado's. And while we are at it, we will just hand Ford and Jeep and Landrover the mid size body on frame off road SUV market..

Since the 4 runner comes off the same assembly line as land cruisers and Lexus vehicles, I think you might have a better chance at the new gen reliability with it than you do the Tundra/Tacoma/Sequoia.

Why noy? Toyota has plenty of SUV and CUV that overlap the midsize segment, and there isn't any competition to the 4Runner at the moment.

Toyota does sell a lot of 4Runners in the US, IDK about the rest of the world but Toyota does sell the 4R in other markets, but not the numbers they do in the US. Those other markets have plenty of overlap as far as Toyota products go.

Toyota does not want to lose sales, but it could become less profitable to import 4Runner to the US and not worth the cost.

Toyota might also want to introduce something to compete with the Maverick, and that could make up for the loss of 4R market share.

Can the Tacoma plants in Mexico keep up with Tacoma, and 4Runner TNGA-F production?

Toyota can't seem to keep up with current Tacoma demand. We aren't talking Tundra and Sequioa sales that are no where close to Tacoma sales.

The lack of competition in that segment has me believing 5th gen is the end of the line for 4Runner.

Lexus will have the new GX to gauge what they should do with 4Runner.
