4th Gen Tacoma (2024+)

Reviewing this thread, I see a lot of concern about the potential reliability and longevity of a turbocharged engine. Valid points but I think there are a multitude of ways to mitigate both concerns. Toyota will employ various tactics to obtain the HP/torque numbers they need and meet the mileage estimate targets they set and also achieve the reliability and longevity. I have been driving turbocharged cars for over 24 years and have never had any engine issues and that spans three different car MFR's (not affiliated with each other in any way).
I think the new Tacoma will offer two engines one 4 cyl turbo, and another 4 cyl turbo with hybrid assist (think iForceMax). I have always felt Toyota under rated their engines and also offered power in the lower range of the vehicle capacity all in the interest of sustaining the legendary reliability and longevity. It could be that other MFR's "pad" their numbers and Toyota's specs are the honest rating but either way it amounts to the same thing. Having just purchased a 2022 Tacoma Limited Nightshade Edition I won't likely be buying a Gen 4 but it will probably be a solid vehicle, Toyota knows how much their bottom-line depends on this vehicle.

A concept for the new Tacoma. There is no way that they would spend time making that if the new Tacoma which is supposed to be EV at sometime will look nothing like that. I still think it will look like both of the mentioned. David from Automotive press is usually pretty close with his renderings

I am pretty sure Toyota already announced there will not be an EV Tacoma, but the EV truck will occur under a different nameplate.

 

A compact single-cab EV would be really cool. Would need to be affordable for day laborers in order to really take off though.

 

Perhaps adding EVs to a manufacturers fleet will restore single cab trucks and two passenger sporty options. At this point-in-time the mpg fleet requirements have killed the regular cab.

 

I have heard that there will be a 2.4 hybrid and a 2.4 turbo hybrid max as well as a non turbo non hybrid option

 

Is that Mike Sweers guy still the head truck engineer at Toyota?

 

It’s not the potential reliability and longevity of a turbocharged engine that concerns us, but it’s because they cost a ton of $$ when and if they do need service vs a N/A engine, as illustrated in the video above.
And they blew it with the ’22 Tundy that had a high reliability ratings. The Ram already moved ahead in ’23, imagine that lol!

I maybe in the new vehicle market in the next couple years. I have a grandson who will be looking to drive by then and my plan is to hand him my current trouble free ’16 taco and I’ll get a new one. But whatever I get it will not be a turbo motor.
Not because I think they all are junk, even though some clearly are.

If TOYOTA can’t or won’t accommodate me, then maybe a Frontier is in our future. But if the Frontier goes turbo, I can choose to keep my current ’16 and buy something used with a N/A motor.
We have the power of the purse, and must choose wisely if we want a decent retirement life later if we so choose, or live paycheck to paycheck.

In other words, life is about choices.

I talked to a guy today who just got a new 2nd gen Tundra, he said he didn't want anything to do with a turbo Tundra or F-150.

That's only one person, and there are plenty of people who don't mind the turbo trucks.

 

A lot of people have already been burned once by turbo repair costs. I'm not burning my money for some alleged improvement lol!

I got an ecoboost Ford that I'll probably get rid of before anything happens to it, and I don't really need it for anything.

 

Or since you already bought it and may loose a lot on trade, I'd consider rolling the the dice. Those dam choices lol!

 

Certainly don't dispute the potential higher repair costs associated with high performance turbo engines and Toyota does have to make some tough decisions, they must improve MPG and engine performance to remain competitive with the rest of the "mid-sized" trucks making up their competition. As I mentioned all of my turbo engines I've had in a Ford SHO, VW Jetta and Mazda CX-9 have been rock solid, fun to drive and the tiny turbocharged 2.5 turbo that powers my full sized 7 passenger Signature CX-9 completely overpowers my Tacoma in every way, it's a fantastic powertrain. I still think they will go turbocharged (even if for the Tacoma I don't think that is the best choice). A more powerful NA V-6 with MPG equivalent to the current one mated to an 8 or 10 speed tranny would be great to up the tow and payload ratings and then they could offer perhaps a turbo 4 for those seeking better mileage maybe? I'm interested to see where they go, but based on the Tundra it will likely be turbo, turbo, turbo...

 

I mentioned Mike S as an example of Toyota not living up to their reputation as extremely capable vehicle designers. I am aware he was only involved in TMNA R&D for the Taco, 4R, Sequoia & Tundra programs.

Being fair to Mike, I think the 4R, 2G Tundra & Sequoia programs were successful with regard to their market goals for North America. I guess we'll all see how the new Tundra shakes out for everyone in a few years.

 

I guess thats why there is such a cult following of the First Gen Raptors with the V8. Ive seen a number of people who bought 2nd Gen Raptors sell them and get another First Gen.
