a lot of the reason for the $39k truck is to get all the safety stuff that comes standard in a $25k Corolla.

Not with Toyota's version of their steering yoke. It will also probably be called the PPU Prius Pick Up.

Lol...yeah its a concept so who knows, but I think it IS a category of vehicle that Toyota totally should throw a hat in the ring.

I think they would do a good job in the category and give some competition to the others. Hyundai and Ford already have them and Kia is right behind. Although I think Kias is planned to be a Hilux/Ranger competitor to Australia and I'm sure the US market at some point. Subaru has to be looking at the category again as well. It also wouldn't take much for Honda do come out with a smaller Ridgeline.

The argument for EV only is everything will soon be EV only. Designing and making a platform that can do both would be more expensive and end up with compromises.

I'm sure Toyota is banking on their SS batteries being the game changers that will make people's concerns about range and charge times irrelevant. Making it EV only will allow it to be less expensive, lighter, more performance, more payload, and more interior room. Why handicap a future design with dinosaur (ICE) compatibility?

Funny the Maverick interior dimensions are actually pretty close to Tacoma, which most would agree doesn’t necessarily need to be more compact inside.

Overall length is the biggest difference (13”), the Maverick having a 6” shorter bed out back, and shorter hood benefitting from a transverse arrangement up front. Similar space, smaller footprint.

What separates Maverick from other unibodies like Santa Cruz & Ridgeline is its hybrid drivetrain availability.

Hybrid is the route that Toyota took with Gen4 Tacoma, which is one reason why it absolutely leapfrogs its competition. Pretty smart, also helps that nobody does hybrid like Toyota.

    Exactly.
Also Toyota is being left behind in the electric truck segment. This would be a perfect vehicle to enter that segment.

Unibody uses less material and is easier to build. Elon went with a unibody for the CT because it easier/less expensive to manufacture and assemble. I think the odd design of the CT is because it is so massive, the triangulated roof line was needed for strength. Maybe he just liked the look.

For BEVs the battery "tray" acts as a defacto frame giving added rigidity. All modern aircraft use monocoque or semi-monocoque construction. You don't need a frame for strength. Manufacturing advances like the "Gigapress" will continue to make unibodies stronger and quicker/less expensive to make. Are we ready to accept a frameless and engineless trucks?

I am. The only way Toyota can stop their frames from rusting away is to eliminate them completely. :D

When I was 17 my dad bought me a 1911 (over 40 years ago). I still love to shoot my 1911s but for duty, carry, road trips, and SHTF, I use my Glock. Embrace the future.

But the Colt was invented 85 years before that.
