I don't think they are made for that. Nice trucks for paved roads.

No question that they are nice trucks for paved roads, they are also the best looking full size IMO.

To me it’s like audis, bmws and Mercedes. They drive awesome, are super comfortable but for how long?

Honesty, I do drive my Ford into remote places for work. In 22 years of driving Ford pickups for work, I’ve never had one fail me in any way. Never been stranded once.

The only caveat would be, I’ve never driven a Ford work truck that was more than 10 years old.

    Nice!

I did have an older Ford pickup (2007) which never left me stranded, was very reliable. I just don’t have faith in EB engines. I’m definitely not shitting on Ford. Everyone I know that had/has fords with NA engines say they are super reliable.

I was actually looking to buy 2018 Ford F-150 5.0 AC FX4, but no MT offered. If they did, I would be on Ford forums right now.

@Stocklocker, this is the front of the 4.0 SOHC I had in my Ford. An afterthought on a 4.0 OHV. It had 3 timing chains and even with that insane design that engine was stellar, thirsty but bombproof. I got about 13-14 mpg with e load 31.6” duratracs and steel procomps.

One extremely important, often overlooked detail, is that Toyota’s “King of remote travel and off road reliability”, the Landcruiser, is fitted with a twin-turbo diesel in the 200 series and a single-turbo diesel in the 70 series. Having a turbo clearly does not mean a sacrifice in reliability.

If Toyota makes a turbo Tacoma or 4Runner with a durable design, that will be a win for us all. Better drivability, power, and economy.

In my off-roading group, they only drive Toyota’s. Couple have LCs with the turbo diesels. They drive like new with 300k km. I definitely trust Toyota’s turbocharged engines vs fords. My ex’s escape 1.6 EB engine had to be replaced at about 20k km because coolant got into the oil, what a piece of shit.

Toyota has made the prius very reliable. I'd contend they expend a LOT more effort to make it reliable than they do a comparatively simpler corolla.

If toyota can made a machine with 20 parts 95% reliable...how much better would a 10-part machine be with the same effort? That's the point. All this added complexity is the enemy of reliability. Even for Toyota. So a twin turbo 4 cyl is more complex than a N/A 6 cyl, which is still more complex than a N/A 4 cyl. I remember when we all got around just fine with N/A 4 cyls?

They're not going to put for the effort on a routine Tacoma that they do with a Land Cruiser. Similarly, they staked their Hybrid reputation on the Prius. I wonder if they sold those at a loss, even.

Good for you, why is that important for me to know?:notsure: I was replying to another user.

You can speculate, as there's no harm in that. I will stick by my own evidence, of what I know for a fact. Anyone is free to speculate, just as anyone else can respectfully disagree with it and explain why from their own perspective or insight.

However, when you tell people that they are wrong and claim as you did with 2025-26, you do need to back it up beyond just making assumptions. If you weren't doing that, then this comment of mine doesn't apply at all.

    Certainly, glad to.

I would expect a Toyota to last longer than a Ford. Many customers expect to get at least ten years out of a Ford. The SSV Expedition, and F150 are both equipped with the 3.5 ecoboost, I think that's the only engine available on the Expedition. Who ever is purchasing the SSV models is probably counting on a life cycle of 10 years, or longer if possible.

Mostly everyone already agrees with this, from what has been developing over the past week. Most folks on TW are not thinking this is it 100% under the covers, having said this myself and a few others before me. Maybe a different story elsewhere.

I believe at Ford, we re-introduced this on the 2008 Super Duty (P356) in January 2007 and then on the T6 Ranger (P375) internationally in 2010 (released in August 2011). It grew a bit bigger for USDM P375N in 2018-19.

Tacoma wasn't first, because I remember it was echoing this from the Tundra, which had been launched in August 2013, which itself borrowed the idea from Ford after seeing the 2008 Super Duty and 2011 Super Duty (which retained that theme).

    toyota_tundra_limited_crewmax_trd_off-road_16.jpg

I personally believe that everyone was inspired by the F - O - R - D grille on the SVT Raptor introduced in 2009, in addition to the 2008 Super Duty. If anyone can find any examples before 2007, thanks because I can't recall.

    ford_f-150_svt_raptor_supercab_6.jpg

F-150 line was probably the last Ford pickup to get them, because although we did not have it at 2015 sales launch in December 2014, that quickly changed. The decision was made in 2015 for the 2018 P552 MCA, due in September 2017. Why? Ranger was coming stateside and SD already had them, so better to align all of them with that signature.

It was the last Ford to get stamped letters on the tailgate, but not the first. Reason it got them, was incoming 2019 Ranger and SD already having them. I think that influenced Toyota with first set of TRD Pros with the SVT Raptor and previous generation Super Duty for the tailgate.

Haha, I see you on that one, but I disapprove. I hope that 2GR-FKS continues then, like 1GR-FE in developing markets for the Land Cruiser 300 (GRJ-300). Unless Toyota is prepared to develop an all-new manual, that can be used in both Hilux and Tacoma. RC62F is currently Tacoma only, while Hilux and Prado get different transmissions.

    Amen LOL.

    Now, that's more like it.

When pigs fly, haha. If a manual is even retained, might be even more limited to a 1 or 2 TRD trims. This is only if Toyota develops a new gearbox which can also be used in 4-cyl Tacomas or they retain 2GR V6. Now that right there, I cannot be certain. Very small chance they keep 2GR as a base/midlevel engine and are even willing to keep RC62F manual box.

Thats why I am making plans to get a new truck with a manual sometime within the next year so if they quit when the 4th gen comes along, I already have one.

Then if Toyota shocks us and happens to offer a manual on the 4th gen I will trade up after the newness wears off and you can get a good deal on one.

We have a fleet of Ford trucks at work from F-250s all the way up to F-750’s. I got to say I would be hard pressed to complain about any of them. They all are 4x4 and pull trailers. I mean they are Meticulously maintained, but regardless, they are solid trucks. Probably should mention they are Diesel. We have few Chevys in the fleet too but more Fords. I love my Tacoma and would still buy it over a Ford truck … but over all the Fords seem to hold their weight.

    this and that...
@meh: what i mean by antiquated is, its behind in the technology, and shoot, even the powertrain like you mentioned. for a long time even after its mid cycle refresh it was behind technology wise. didnt it JUST (the year i believe) get blind spot monitoring, and dynamic radar (year before) before that? the headunit was ancient history that also JUST got updated. led technology didnt grace the 4runner till just this year too i believe. if you look at it, it took toyota 11 years to just bring the 4runner up to sop. look at something like the rav4. in limited trim that vehicle is cutting edge as far as toyota standards go. the 4runner limited even in that trim wasnt afforded the same luxuries. i actually can say the same for the sequoia cause i had both as current generations. i guess the tundra as an extention was the same, but this new gen tundra looks fricking awesome and doesnt feel or look "antiquated" at all. dont get me wrong, i love and absolutely adore the 4runner, but as i said previously, the 4runner could benefit from a new gen more than the taco can. in the end i guess thats neither here nor there though, cause reverbing what you said earlier, the t4r is a global platform where the taco is more of just a domestic one.
