I came within a pubic hair of buying a 4Runner this go round when I bought my Tacoma. At the end of the day I guess I was still just a pick up truck sort of guy. This is my fourth one, but I suspect in 10-12 years when I’m ready to replace this I will be ready for a 4Runner by then.

We have both. At this point the Tundra and Tacoma developments are certainly interesting for folks wondering about the 4Runner. Should be interesting now that the Bronco finally launched.

It’s likely not the fuel blend change reducing your fuel economy. It has cooled down which means the intake air charge is denser which means the ECU compensates with more fuel to maintain the target air fuel ratio. More air, more fuel, more timing, more power, lower fuel economy.

The new 4WD Tundra is rated 17/22. Most test runs I've seen posted are 19.5ish MPG. Hybrid should gain 4-5 MPG. Certainly an improvement over the horrendous 13/17 of the old truck, but I think Toyota had to do better given the full-size competition. They really need to get it right with the Tacoma; its much more relevant to their bottom line than the Tundra.

I hope the back windows is still a sideways slider instead of one that rolls down........so everyone still has something to bitch about.

4th gen Tacoma, should be renamed 4Runner Utility or 4Runner pickup. Toyota won't ditch the Tacoma brand, but something different would be cool. 4Runner could become it's own brand from Toyota, if all those vehicles came with a manual transfer case, that eould help the brand image.

No one likes disposable. You still see 1st gen tacomas and earlier running everywhere. I doubt the ones we have now (dual fuel injection, iffy transmissions) will last like them. But adding turbos to small displacement motors, auto-stop motors, and hybrid drivetrains? No thanks. Hope mine lasts a long time. Vehicles have become so bastardized to meet average fleet mileage. I'd rather have a full electric truck over these overwrought designs they're coming out with to make ICEs "work."

I can tell you you definitely don't see a lot of 1st gens and older where I live. They've all rusted out. But I can appreciate one when I do see it.

Anything will last if you take care of it. Yes, vehicles are a little more complex today but they're also generally more reliable.

As for turbos, it just depends on the engine. If it is an engine with a turbo slapped on, it isn't good. If it is an engine designed around the turbo it is much better. If they were so bad Ford (among others) wouldn't keep selling them because people wouldn't keep buying them. Toyota certainly wouldn't be going down that path either. The most common issues I see with said engines rarely have anything to do with the turbo (or head gaskets, etc) and are things any engine can have issues with. Let's ignore the fact that people had the same concerns when they added turbos to diesel engines back in the day but now it is extremely common and those engines routinely see extremely high miles.

As for auto start/stop, that's usually not much of an issue either outside of noticing your car shut off. The big worry with those was people thinking it put undue stress on the starter. Most start/stop systems I've seen don't even use the starter and instead stop the engine in the right spot to start back up using the fuel injection system. As for hybrids, that is even less of an issue. In most cases you have no clue weather the car is using the engine or not unless there's an indicator light.

As for "iffy transmissions." The 3rd gens have a lot of complaints about the way it shifts but I have yet to see failures related to it, let alone common ones. A lot of what it boils down to is driving style and not being used to something that is optimized for MPG. We're not in the days of the 3 and 4 speed transmissions anymore.

As for electric cars, I agree. In a roundabout way they are much simpler and, not withstanding computer components wearing out, will be much more reliable. Although cars have had computers for decades and they do last.

Just depends on your perspective. We also have both. My wife and I both prefer the Tacoma interior (minus the larger cupholders on the 4Runner). The Tacoma is more modern on the inside as well.

Had my 1st Gen for the past 19 years, 434K on the clock, timing belt every 90K, clutch at 130K, then it didn’t start nickel and diming me until 250K, which was great. Every failure has been a mechanical one, nothing electronic has ever caused an issue, other than a fuel pump. Anything will last if you’re willing to keep throwing money at it. Believe there is a misconception that the old trucks are super reliable, they are to a point, and even then it needed major repairs early in its life. Usually it costs me $1000-1500 a year to keep it going, this year was the worst, tossed $6000 at it. Seemed like every other month something would break. And still needs a few things. Could easily toss another $5-6K at it. My wife finally stepped in and said enough is enough, just buy a new truck…so I decided to throw in the towel and did.

I resisted all of the electronic Gee-gaws for years, but rather enjoying them now. I may not go as long this go around, and trade in every 5 years instead. A hybrid Tacoma peaks my interest more than full electric, only because the infrastructure is quite lacking at this time here in Idaho. Be ok for commuting, but kinda screwed for my back country trips.

I have both of those things. Although our 4Runner does not. But I didn't factor those into my preference.
